In the near future,i will be rebuilding my engine. The rebuild if for the turbo so that should give you an idea of the internals(i.e. forged pistons, etc.) For you turbo guys who have rebuilt your engine, pls post what it cost you(including parts, machining, etc.) TIA!

$1,300 for bottom-end rebuild kit (from CI Motorsports). That included 8.8:1 JE pistons, Eagle rods, water pump, Melling oil pump, clevite bearings, ARP headbolts, MLS headgasket, no timing equipment and lower-end gasket kit.

$130 for mechanical timing belt kit from Part Dinosaur.

$150 for hot tanking, boring and honing the block by local shop.

$125 for balancing the rotating assembly by local shop.

$40 for miscellaneous lube, oil, coolant, RTV, anaerobic sealant.

$60 to rent an engine hoist for a day.

$8 for seven boxes of Bandaids.

Those are all the expenses I can think of... so it was about $2,800 in all.

Head and top end: $2250.00

Block machining and balancing rotating assembly: ~$500.00

And I'm really sure I am missing a couple things here and I'm not counting Fuel and spark control. So it's really damn close to $5000.00 in the last year into just my engine. Mind you I haven't gone turbo yet (yes I'm gonna boost my high compression engine). This is very expensive way to go but I am not disappointed at where my money went.

Figure in at least 3k...Thats just for a forged rebuild, with machine work, not assembled by someone else..This includes new oil pump, all gaskets, waterpump, timing belt and components. Dont forget all the misc items such as oil/filter, coolant, spark plugs, wires, hoses/clamps, assembly lube, special tools, rtv, and other related engine items..providing you assemble it yourself..Headwork machining and upgrading head parts will add to this figure very quickly lol..

I remember handing over about 2700 when it was all said and done. I think 3k is a safe assumption depending on how much machine work you chose to have done. All the little stuff adds up so quick.

3k is a good number if you are planning to leave the top end pretty much alone aside from a valve job and seals. If you want to get a little more agressive like I did and do Cams, P&P head, 3 angle VJ, A set of springs and locks, maybe SS Valves. Then you are looking at another 2k easliy. Ask Driggs he's got over $1500 in his head alone if I'm not mistaken. I have pretty close to $1400 in mine not counting the cams, cam gears, lifters, rockers, or gaskets. An engine build is not a cheap thing.

well, that makes a little more sense

Well the wiseco 8.8:1 pistons were $450 I think. The Eagle H-beam rods were like $350 and the machining was $750 since I worked there.

If I'm remembering right, I dropped $1500 on the first bottom end kit from Gottude (now defunkt). Second set of pistons when the Wisecos shit the bed on me ran just a hair over $500. Given the head was $1700, the cams ran me $450, and the gears were $100 used, I'd say I've easily put $6k into the engine bay including misc odds and ends. Closer to $7k if you count the AFX ECU, MSnS, and wideband.

Jesus. I could have left it stock, bought a running Galant VR4, prepped it for stage rally, and completed an entire season for that much. :rolleyes

If you're going to boost the engine, invest in a solid bottom end rebuild.

If you're going to play all motor for a bit, put about $2000 into the head and leave the bottom end alone if you can.

I had to do it twice b/c I blew my first motor after about 900 miles. A main rod bearing spun on me. So I spent $3000 .... twice.

It was a little less than 2 grand. And that was with them assembling the block for me.
