Hey everyone, my brothers 95 eclipse is on lifesupport big time lol, he was driving and the car just dies, we werent going very fast, then it wouldnt start, so we got it pulled home, they checked out a few things, and found a rock in the timing belt or the gear i dont remember which, im guessing inside the belt somehow, but he bought a new timing belt, us and our stepdad have been messing with it, he dont have the extra cash to put it in the shop unless he has too, but my stepdad talked to a local shop and he told him how to set the timing, but it still will not start just keep turning over and over, it doesnt even sound like it is trying to start, anyone know what to try next? im sorry if this sounds like not enough details b ut its hard to describe. do we have to have a timing light to set it? any help would be great, thanks guys

First of all, did you check the compression? IF the valves are fine and the timing belt was done correctly then next Q is: Are you not getting spark or fuel? We need more info. And no, you don't need a timing light.

pull your plugs and leave them connected to the wires and turn it over and see if you are getting spark or barely any at all...if not then timing is off.....

to set the timing line the marks up dead on at the cams
(the dots should be right next to each other when lined up)

then on the crank gear at the bottom line that mark up with the mark on the block......then the timing should be dead on! any ?'s just pm me

yes, when you check everything like they said,first check your compression, you will want a good tester for this, next spark... pick a good ground point like an exhaust manifold or something and test your spark plugs, if all your plugs are firing, smell for fuel, you will eventually start to flood the engine which will result in backfiring, Next check your ASD relay, check all your sensors, and double check your timing for alignment If nothing is still working and your sure you have compression, air, fuel, spark, and its getting it all at the right time come back here

ok guys ... we tested to see if the plugs were firing, and yes they are, double checked the alignment and it is dead on, gonna try to pick up a compression tester soon, and also guys when we tried starting it a few times i could smell gas, very noticeable. Is a compression test the absolute next thing to do? and my stepdad checked a few of the sensors earlier, ill see what we can do about a compression tester

Fixed it for you. From your description, I would guess that you have some bent valves. Do a comp check and give us the numbers.

Definetly. If there was a rock that got caught, it's a good chance that it skipped a few teeth, and the valves kissed the piston.
