I searched a little bit, and only got about 4 threads..maybe I just used the wrong terminology. But Im in need of some resources for finding a rebuilt 420a or even a new one. I really dont have a place to start, and when I "googled" it, I got about 40 referral sites before getting anything close.

Any ideas?

they have crate motors, rebuild kits. all kings of crap. I have never used them but peeps here say they are pretty good.

To start with you might want to look into what you are trying to accomplish. IE if you want to keep it stock, or if you want to have a fully built or turboed motor.

Also what is wrong with your current engine? Blown head gasket? Spun rod bearing? Hole in the block? None of the above? The reason I ask is that based on what you have is going to determine what you have to work with.

I always suggest building it yourself instead of paying someone else. This way you know what goes into it, and what is going to fail if anything. I can get all the parts for a high performance build up in under a week. A decent machine shop should be able to take care of all your machining needs in under a week for not a whole lot of $$$. And all you need is enough mechanical ability and tools to disassemble and reassemble it. Believe me alot of guys on this forum were not great mechanics when they came here. But they all learned from tinkering, and alot of those same guys have built their own engines.

Asking questions is a good way to learn. So is reading up on other's experiences. There are places out there to get a prebuilt engine. However I suggest against this because it is not a rewarding and it's harder to track down problems in an engine that someone else put together. I suggest staying away from Howell Automotive, they are very pricey and take forever to deliver their product. They do however have great customer service. If they could ship out their products in a timely fashion I would have no complaints.

that's pretty good $ for a performance setup, not too expensive at all

I would email them or call them to make sure they are still in business.

Agreed. Either way, that's a lot of cash to just send off into limbo for a few months. The only vendor I would consider these days would be Punishment Racing. At least I know they're going to shoot you straight when they talk to you.
