103393, 420A N/A hp build-up Posted by GEFFEN928, Mar-07-07 04:21 PM
Good Evening - I own a 1997 Dodge Avenger ES.......The bigger, slower cousin to the cars in this forum. I also belong to the ASOG/ASEC Web forums. I have owned this car since new...it was a factory order w/a 5speed. I plan on doing a N/A hp build this spring and I want to get some input from you guys....following are my plans.......
420a bored .020 w/stroker crank 2.2L total volume 10.5:1 CR forged pistons 1mm larger I/E valves crane 016 cam w/matched springs/locks/retainers w/PT style followers adjustable cam gears bored throttle body borla header/cat-back/ hi-flow cat ice man CAI underdrive pully AFX ECU
I'm looking for a fun to drive everyday car....something that starts everytime I turn the key. I'm NOT looking for an overheating beast w/ no low-end torque that is a tuning nightmare. How does my plan look to you folks....I know that most people think that bolting on a turbo is the " quick fix " However, I just think that I would have lots of tuning issues to deal with and I just don't want to have to deal with a secondary fuel managment system...at all. Any input would be great.
Thank You- Geffen928

Sounds good though you might want to go with ram air instead of CAI, if you ever have to drive in rain, etc. (some people will disagree w/ me I know but it's just something to consider.) There are several all-motor guys on this forum that will help you out when you need it, like me if I can... Welcome.

No turbo, means no turbo. I won't even address it.
I'm cool with the set-up you are talking about (I presume that the AF/X ECU works with the Avenger). Couple things; I see you are trying to use the stroker to pick up a little bottom end. What size are you looking at for the TB bore? I would recommend the 55 because of your goals (of course port match). That will give you some breathing without sacrificing much bottom end. If you do go 60mm I think that you will be unhappy with your response.
I would at least put a polish into your intake. It helps to give you a little quicker response.
Dump the oversize valves. Will do you no good. BUT I would recommend going with stainless valves. And doing the five angle valve job is only helpful (since you are doing the head anyway)
I am not familiar with the Crane's. I am partial to the Crower 2's though. But you have low end loss to deal with on those.
Maybe deck a little extra off the head, brings the comp up just a bit.
It's hard to tell what YOU would consider "good" low end power and overall power. But what you are talking about will give you some more pop.

like bullettdsm said...you will need to do something with your intake manifold...I have a 95 that im doing a high comp setup like that and im going with the Crower 2's Crane makes a lot of nice cams, and they also make a lot of junk, people on here seem to favor the Crowers over the Cranes, but neon guys periodically will be seen running something like a crane 22! who knows, and you will need to deck some off the head!! Compression is good! best of luck to you!

Have the heads ported, get the flow #'s and have a custom grind cam done specific to your new head flow. F worrying about what crower or crane has to offer off the shelf.
