103385, power steering pump help Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-07-07 10:59 AM
I am trying to remove my power steering pump so I can bring it back as a core for a new one I have ordered.
The power steering pump is 2 parts, right? I opened the pump and I saw a black ring clip that was all bent out of shape. It almost looked like the inside of the pump was warped and smushed, too.
The problem is that I'm trying to remove those 2 big hoses from the pump. I got one off, but I cannot get the other one, which is a 22mm bolt I think. Since I have the pump loose and out, I cannot hold the pump in place to loosen that bolt off.
Also, how do you get the power steering pulley off the pump? As said before, it is loose and hanging by the big hose. I cannot get a good hold of the entire assembly to remove the pulley.
Thanks guys

Also, will the new pump include that metal gasket, and clip that is bent in the following photo?

Myke the new pump should be complete minus the pulley if I am not mistaken. There is no reason to disassemble it. So don't worry about that spring clip (I'm pretty sure it's suppossed to look like that.
As for removing the large hose from it. I'd just bolt it back to the bracket loosely long enough to break the banjo bolt free.
As for the pulley leave it on there til you go to get the new pump. Since if the new pump comes equipped with a pulley there's no need to remove the pulley, and if it does not odds are the parts store (Napa Preferrably) has a vice and some tools to get your pulley off for you.

this is approximately what I ordered from Autozone. I'm showing this one since it has a photo. http://www.napaonline.com/masterpages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470&LineCode=NSP&PartNumber=215934&Description=Power+Steering+Pump+w%2fo+Reservoir+-+Remfd
I think since it is not the kit, and it's a remanufactured one that requires a core it probably won't have the pulley with the new one, right? I'd be better if it did come with the pulley for my situation.

Dude, you don't have to dismantle the whole pump to get the pulley off.
Take off the bolt that holds the pulley on, tap it with a hammer and it'll come off. It rides on a splined shaft. PBlaster helps.
The hoses, well.. they're easier when the pump is still in the bracket. Put it back in the bracket, then take the hoses off.

I got the hose off the pump and now all I have to worry about is the pulley.
I'm going to take the pump/pulley to a friend's shop and we'll just break it off there and put it on the new one.
Thanks!

I don't have air tools or a compressor. ($500-600) I got a baby on the way!

103423, RE: ok, got it off. Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-09-07 02:59 PM
ok,
Do you HAVE to have the car jacked up to install the new power steering pump? I'm reading in these here directions that you gotta jack the car up to bleed/flush/install the new pump.
I didn't jack the car up when I started doing this, and um the car is too low in the garage. Also, I'm parked up to the lip or edge inside the garage, so it's going to be fun to jam a floor jack in the front mouth of the bumper.

103424, RE: ok, got it off. Posted by shazow1969, Mar-09-07 04:21 PM
No man no need to jack it up. Just bolt her in and hook up the lines and belt top it off and start it up. turn the wheel slowly from lock to lock a few times then check your fluid level. Repeat til the system no longer takes fluid in.

I got the new PS pump in the car, but when I started it up, the same damn loud whistling/knocking sound started coming from the pump!
Also, the fluid is milky and yellowish, even with new fluid, and it has bubbles. Yes, I know it needs to be bled, but fuck, why is this so complicated? The pump is also growling and is noisy when I turn the wheel. When I turn the wheel, PS fluid dumps all out of the resevoir tank. HELP!
It's taken me 2 days to get this goddamn thing in the car, and now that it is, the SAME noises and problems are back, even with this new pump. Did I fuck up the new one, too?
Somebody help me. I let it cool down, with the cap off, tried to get the air out. The only thing that's bugging me is the lower pressure hose connection I forgot to put the little tiny rubber o-ring thing in there when I put it all back together and in the car. If I find out I have to take this fucking pump out for a 5th fucking time, I'm going to sell this fucking car for $1000 flat OBO.

103452, RE: need help please Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-12-07 06:11 AM
ANYBODY please help - I don't know if I already messed up my new PS pump. It gushes out PS fluid and the pump is still making the whistling God-Awful noises with the rpms. Everytime I barely turn the wheel the pump growling and spitting out milky new fluid.
Thanks

103453, RE: need help please Posted by DarkOne, Mar-12-07 06:48 AM
You don't have to bleed PS systems dude.
|
103455, RE: need help please Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-12-07 08:13 AM
then why is it making that same loud whistling/whirring sound? Why is the pump moaning and groaing loudly? Why is the resovior pouring out the fluid all over the floor?
It's as if I did nothing to fix it, even after I:
1. tightening everything tighter,
2. and cleaned the tensioner,
3. put back the missing long bolt through the pump itself,
4. and put new fluid in it.

103467, RE: need help please Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-13-07 04:01 AM
so I guess nobody knows how to help me or fix this problem.

103468, RE: need help please Posted by RoninEclipse2G, Mar-13-07 04:04 AM
double check the alignment on your banjo bolt, first time I did mine I didn't line it up right and it whined like a motherfucker, pull it out and note where the holes are and mark the top of the bolt so that you can line it up with the openings in the hose
|
103469, RE: need help please Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-13-07 04:25 AM
You really can't get that part wrong. I've got that alumnimum bracket thing for the top one lining that one up, and the bottom hose fitting wont go any other way because the 2nd hole doesn't line up with the bracket. It's one way or no way for me.
I can't beleive nobody can help me on this. This is the most basic damn thing ever on these fucking cars.
I give up.

103470, RE: need help please Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-13-07 04:33 AM
Today I just started it up, empty PS resevoir and all.
When I shut the engine off, of COURSE the fluid starts spitting out the resevoir again. This time, I could hear the pump or something making these weird sucking noises. It was some kind of distinct sound and then went away as the fluid started coming up and out the resevoir.
Will SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!??!?!?!? I don't want to have to take this thing to a mechanic or dealer.
|
103471, RE: need help please Posted by RoninEclipse2G, Mar-13-07 04:35 AM
first off, chill a bit, even with that bracket you CAN misalign the banjo bolt. other issues are if the fluid is milky someone might have put the wrong fluid in at some point like brake fluid, that could be causing the hoses to fail and block the passages
|
103472, RE: need help please Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-13-07 04:36 AM
I am definitely using Power Steering fluid.

Random thought, Mykie. Could you have the hoses connected to the wrong points? (i.e., swapped?) I've never removed the PS pump itself for fears of precisely the same kind of shit you're running into right now. Who knows what the fuck will happen!
My only guess, since I've never removed the pump like this, would be that the pump, like most pumps, only flows one way. Even then, though, I would think the fluid is either going into the PS res via one of those hoses or the other. I know it's a mess, but as a last ditch effort, I wonder what swapping the hoses to the resie would do? Could be there is a check valve somewhere. :shrug
Sorry I can't do better.

103477, RE: need help please Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-13-07 05:52 AM
Well I messed with the top hose, connected to the 22mm banjo bolt. I loosened it, and moved it a little straigher. Now, the pump doesn't overflow when its ON. But, it will overflow the resovior now then I turn the engine OFF. Isn't that weird?! So at least now it doesn't overflow when the motor is running, but it sucks because now I'm out of PS fluid and I gotta go buy some more.
I am 100% positive the hoses are on correctly. I kept the clamp ring thingy on the upper one, so I knew that one went there. It's got this weird aluminum bracket with it and 2 brass o-rings. It's the one that hose goes directly to the bottom of the ps pump resovior tank. Plus, I never took the ends off either pressure hose.
It's the oddest thing, I'm afraid this new PS pump I ordered ($176) is shot because something happened to this one maybe? The loud grinding, groaning sound with the loud metallic whistling sound is still there, too.

103480, RE: need help please Posted by RoninEclipse2G, Mar-13-07 07:43 AM
did you get a warranty? if so you might try taking it back, could be a bad rebuild, unfortunatly that means removing it once again. also did the new one come with new copper washers? if not that could be part of the leaking
|
103484, RE: need help please Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-13-07 08:12 AM
I did receive 2 new brass o-rings and used them, top and bottom of banjo bolt hose fitting.
I also got 1 tiny rubber o-ring, which I previously did not have inside the bottom pressure hose connection. Now I do. But, I do have 2 extra larger/medium size rubber o-rings. Where do those go?
Check this out: I got rid of the horrible whistling/grinding noise now when its running by using engine brite gunk off spray.
The pump now maintains its own pressure and fluid now on its own. The steering is smooth and strong, and the pump no longer moans or is loud. Looks like the cheap Kroger grocery brand power steering fluid works better than STP power steering fluid. It said it was for chrysler, ford, and chevy motors.
I turned the car off, see if it overflows. Check. All good.
Turned it back on now, and it makes the horrible grinding/whislting noise now when the gas hits over 2000 rpms and above, getting louder with each rpm of the engine.
So now I got it back to the way it was behaving prior to me ripping it out and replacing the pump.
What's next? Am I going to have to remove the pump and belt from the engine and start it up to see if it makes that same noise when its out of the car? That would at least trouble shoot if its the pump or not.
I also would like to mention that we did all new belts, new water pump, new cam gear seals, and tightened up everything else with air tools prior to this all happening.

103486, RE: need help please Posted by RoninEclipse2G, Mar-13-07 08:48 AM
maybe bad belt tensioner bearings? when I got my car out of mothballs a few months ago, the tensioner was toast
|
103487, RE: need help please Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-13-07 08:54 AM
the little metal bracket thing that holds the ps pump to the big metal bracket?
Well I took the belt off the pump and fired up the engine. Aside from my throwout bearing on the tranny, the car was quiet as a mouse.
It's definitely the "new" water pump that's making the same racket as my old one was.
|
103488, RE: need help please Posted by DR1665, Mar-13-07 09:02 AM
Sounds like your issues might have cooked that "new" pump, Myke. As much as it would suck to have to start all over again, maybe chalk this one up to a practice run.
Before you do that, though, I'd yank the belt and fire the bitch up. If the noise is still there, then you know it's not the pump, since it will be just sitting there. If you determine that it's definitely the pump, then clean it up pretty good and take it back to Autozone. Tell them you're disappointed that you paid so much for something which proceeded to fall apart immediately and that you'd like a refund, as you've sourced another pump from a buddy. Then scoop up that one on Ebay.
:thumbsup

103491, RE: need help please Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-13-07 09:16 AM
I removed the belt, car quiet as a mouse.
I put the belt on, and it seems that its coming from the pulley side of the pump. Something to do with the pulley. The pump is fluid and smooth as far as steering goes. The problem definitely lies with the pulley or how the belt is turning whats inside the pulley I imagine.
My friend got the pulley off the pump at his shop with an air tool and put the old pulley on the new pump the same way. Is it possible the pulley isn't on the pump correctly?
Thanks

103494, RE: need help please Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-13-07 10:07 AM
there seems to be a little 1/8" of "play" in the shaft the pulley connects to on the ps pump
also, the little metal smooth round one, just below the ps pump where the belt goes through also seems there is a little play too.
I'm clueless where this cricket sounding chirp is coming from.

103499, RE: need help please Posted by shazow1969, Mar-13-07 04:43 PM
What is confusing me is the fact that the reserviour is puking fluid back out when you shut her down. This means to me a blockage somewhere in the system after the pump, causing the pressure side of the system to be over pressurized. Mine did something similar right before the lines on the rack blew out. When that happened I removed the rack and replaced just the lines, and cleaned the rack up. Put it all back together and the noise went away, and the steering seemed smoother, it also stopped puking fluid. If youd like the know the PN's for the lines on the rack are in the CAPS and they were less than $20 each. Hardest part is getting the rack out if you have an aftermarket sway bar.

103502, RE: need help please Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-14-07 03:52 AM
The resevoir isn't overflowing fluid anymore.
I have that same "cricket" sound now after 2k rpm with the gas. It's either the A/C belt, or this pump/pulley combination is bad.

103508, Fixed! Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-14-07 06:59 AM
I went to autozone and bought 2 cans of degreaser, and a brand new power steering belt.
Works perfect now. It was just a damn belt. At least now I have a new ps pump, belts, timing belt, water pump, new seals, new upper and lower radiator hoses, both new 02 sensors upper and lower, and blah blah everything else.
Now it just has a high pitch whine under the hood that fluctuates with the engine sound. That could be because of the battery drain I'm receiving from my power door poppers and alarm. So now it's FINALLY back and running better than ever before!
Thank you to all those that helped, and Driggs the most.
You all have helped me and I am grateful.
Thanks!

double check the accessory tension pulley bearing (between the PS pump and AC compressor) and or your alternator bearings, as long as lois has been sitting they might have gone bad from lack of use, when i got my car up and running again a few months ago they were both whining like a mofo, the alternator I had to replace, but my buddy had a grease gun with a needle and we just cheated with the accessory pulley bearing
|
103512, RE: alternator and bearings Posted by KaptainMyke, Mar-14-07 08:16 AM
that would make sense why the car has trouble keeping a charge when just sitting without driving. Battery dies after about 1-2 days. Maybe there is something going on with the alternator and bearings. Where do I look for that?
|
103516, RE: alternator and bearings Posted by RoninEclipse2G, Mar-14-07 10:32 AM
in the most annoying place, back side of the motor underneath the intake mani, if you can get the car up in the air and turn it on, have someone lightly rev the motor while you listen for where the whining is coming from, best tip I've learned is to close my eyes while listening, your hearing gets more accurate. you can also feel the alternator and see if it gets hot unusually quick (faster than the oil pan) check the wires too, mitsu/chrysler is notorious for putting too small of wire back there for the ammount of amperage our alternators actually put out and that along with age acn cause nasty corrosion that can make the alternator burn out unnecessarily
