102746, crower 3's and vacuum
Posted by brohr01, Jan-20-07 02:33 PM
Hello,
I swapped out my turbo grind cams for a set of crower 3's today and was just looking for some info from some other members that are running the same cams.

right now im on the stock ECU and it is messing everything up, running rich as can be, idle speed all over the place, pulling timing, all sorts of fun stuff. I have a megasquirt sitting on my desk right next to me that will hopefully be running the car this weekend if the weather gets a bit better.

the problem with the stock ECU is it will do whatever it can to make sure it idles as close to 750rpm as possible. i have the throttle stop screw turned out to hold the throttle open slightly to give the motor the extra air needed to idle at like 1500rpm, but once the ecu closes the IAC all of the way and it still sees rpm > than 750 it will start to retard timing until the idle drops down to where the ecu is happy. the stock ecu could get the rpms down to around 950, and my scanner showed spark advance of -10deg.

the stock ecu can also not remove enough fuel across the board to get the car into closed loop. at idle my pre-cat O2 never dropped below 825mVolts and it was just as high most of the time while driving around.

vacuum gauge reads 3-6in/Hg at around 900-1000Rpm and holds steady at 13.5in/Hg at around 1500rpm.

So with the megasquirt im gonna get the car to idle around 1200rpm, seems like it should pull enough vacuum at those rpms to have a decent idle and get the timing and fuel trims in range.

Any one else running these cams care to share anything about there setup or what not and how there car runs on them.

I leave you will a short video of my car starting and idleing...

Are you running adjustable cam gears?? I know the AEM's are not accurately marked for setting timing. As I recall a few people also complained about the fidanza's being wrong as well. I had to use two 1/4" drive 3" extensions in the holes in my crowers to get the timing set then I scribed new timing marks on the cam gears. If your off by one tooth you can be severly off on vacuum.

I know the Crower 3's are very aggressive but 3-6 HG seems very low to me. Double check your timing it can't hurt, just time spent. My Crower 2's are pretty nasty but the stock ECU does hold a decent Idle at about 800RPM though it is lopey.

Yea I bet your timing might be off.

Also, your video didnt work :(

Just to chime in; everything you mention points to timing (or maybe vac leak). I know I'm just running Crower 2's but I get right around 18 hg @ 900. And I dialed in some overlap for my top end.

Even so, that sounds nasty. For a while, I was considering C3s myself, but that's not going to happen now. Good luck to you. Sounds like some decent troubleshooting information there.

I messed around with my cam gears some the other day, this weekend i will be able to get them better dialed in. but i advanced both cams about 5degs and it made a world of difference, my vacuum is up around 8-9in/HG now and it just sounds heathlier, still lopes like mad, but heathly. pulls alot harder now also at a little lower rpm, right now they start making decent power at around 4500rpm well up to 7000 and beyond. major issues right now are getting cam timing set for best performance and getting the megasquirt running, i know the stock ecu does not like these cams at all.

So, with stock ECU and 5*adv on both cams, you say it's driveable? How is that low end before 4500rpm. I had considered these for my daily driver, but considering the way power (with the C2s and massive headwork) doesn't come on until around 3500rpm, I figured the car would be a real turb in the day-to-day.

Are you still running standard sized valves? What kind of valve job did you do? How extreme is the intake side ported? And finally, you're not running one of those OBX or Venom intake manifolds, are you? I would suspect that, with the C3s not coming on until 4500rpm, you'd be trying to increase intake velocity sooner with less regard for top end flow.

Oh man. Bubbley. I hope this guy can get some more footage up. This is farther than I will be taking Daisy for a while, so I want to see it (and hear it)!

sounds like a car with cams and a hint if diesel.

that shows up as a picture of a truck for me.

the car has always been drivable since i put the cams in. i would not recommend running the stock ecu with these cams though as it runs super rich most of the time and pulls ignition timing like crazy. the added cam advance made a big difference and it is more friendly to drive. thses are not for the average person, you need a standalone and some pretty good supporting mods to make it worth it.

and yes, i have oversized valves, crane springs, 3angle valve job, race port on head but im running the stock intake manifold and throttle body as of now. i have a plan for a custom intake with a bigger throttle and of course a turbo is in the works. until i get the megasquirt in im gonna disconnect my knock sensor cause its pulling tons of timing.

I will get some better videos over the weekend and keep you all updated with any new info i can provide. im deff glad i went with these cams, im not trying to make this car have good drivability at this point.

That IS the video, he is walking around to the rear of the car and passing by his truck or something
