I am really sick of having to take apart my ported intake manifold to Clean out all the shit the EGR throws in it, well I have an idea that I searched around for and was wondering if it would work, If I just put a metal mesh screen up to the manifold were the Tube bolts up to help filter out some of the ERG Crap. Would this disturb the flow enough to throw a CEL? Anyone?

Block it off if you are that worried about getting it dirty.

It's exhaust gas being flowed through the tube, not crap that could get filtered out.

Let's look at what EGR is first. Exhaust Gas Recirculation. The carbon that builds up in your intake is a gas when it goes in there and settles. Yes a filter will catch some (but not much) and you will have a larger problem than cleaning your intake out every so often. You will have that filter clog up with carbon much faster than it will build up inside your manifold. This will throw a code for EGR insufficient flow. If you ever remove the EGR tube from the back of the manifold you will notice a buildup of carbon inside the tube, and in the passage into your manifold. If you are worried about carbon in your manifold block off the EGR completely, just keep it around incase you live somewhere with emissions inspections so you can put it back on for inspection. This is my suggestion, do with it what you like.

Well I would remove it, but I really don't have the have the CEL, because if something actually dose go wrong how am I to know? That and they get really annoying

You have a get a code reader. Check it every so often. You should know when your car isn't acting right.

so i have been doing the runnaround on this EGR block off thing,some people tell me its bad for my motor and some people tell me it wont hurt a thing, sence i got my info from a reg mitsu forum, i decided to chime in on this post and see what you guys think about doing the egr block off! good,bad,pro's and con's! i know i will get a little worse gas millage and a little wormer runing temps but thats what the collant system is for!

so my Q is, is this block off going do damage my little 420?

No, it won't damage your 420A. The only difference that I noticed was a check engine light.

Some cars don't even come with an EGR system.

If you are that concerned about the EGR, just remove it and fab some block-off plates for it. You'll throw a CEL most likely, but if you have a OBD-II logger of some sort, you would be able to check for other codes regardless of whether or not the CEL light is on.

ya i already have the plates for it! i am just trying to get as much info on it as possible! tryin to see what other people have exsperianced with the block off if it's caused any problems and what not!

2 years with No issues aside from the "Everything is OK" light being on all the time. It stopped bothering me after about 2 days. Now My current reasoning is to keep all those Exhaust gasses from going back through my brand new engine. Mind you I did not notice any difference in fuel economy when I removed the EGR system. Just the fact that my intake manifold is no longer dirty when I inspect behind the TB.

I say go for it, as it will not hurt anything. Just keep the shit around incase you need it for an emissions inspection.

ya true! i live in minnesota so we have no emisions testing sofar! but my buddy gave me some bad news that MN is trying or did bring back emission's testing and is going to start re-testing this summer! WOW! i only herd this from him so i dont know if its a forsure thing but if it is i know a lot of people that are not going to be very happy!

My car is registered in NY and I have not had an inspection on it in 3 years. Not too concerned since I am in the military and I am a licensed NYS inspector.
