Well lately when I drive, my temperature gauge fluctuates from the middle to the bottom. I did some research and I think I need to replace my Coolant Temp Sensors. My car is a 1996 RS and I see that I have two sensors under the Radiator Cap. My question is are they two different sensors? Or are they the same? I'm going to autozone soon and I don't want to buy the wrong sensors. Also How do I actually change the sensors? Do I have to empty out the coolant or keep the coolant inside? Then just unscrew them? Help is greatly appreciated!

They are both coolant sensors, however one is for the ecu, and one is for the temp gauge in the car. The smaller of the two is the temp gauge. You should drain the coolant out to below that level and then you should be able to take it out without leaking much coolant. Then just take it with you when you go to get a new one to make sure they match up! Oh and you might have to take off the upper radiator hose to get in there I don't really remember.

You can get in there with removing the hose. You CAN also do it without taking out coolant, if you so desire. Just have the new one ready to go in, throw a rag below the area and do the switcheroo. You'll lose a little coolant but nothing that the rag won't catch. Oh keep your coolant cap on, that way the cooling system can't draw in air. Therefore, water/coolant will come out slower.
