102217, CAR STALLS WHILE GOING UP HILL Posted by jeff99gs4, Dec-10-06 01:13 PM
Okay guys I need some help here. My car has been acting funny lately. When I hold the RPMs around 2k the exhuast sounds like its popping and the Air fuel gauge is way lean? Then last night its just started stalling for NO REASON. I was just driving along in gear and it just stoped running like the fuel cut off. Then I tried to restart it and it would not start. So I waited a few minutes with the key off and then tried again and it started right up.
Now today I was driving it and its getting worse...if I'm going up hill it will stall and I can restart it after I turn off the key and wait a minute. But I could NOT get up the hill to my apartment... So I rolled back down the hill andstarted it and turned around and went up the hill backwards and it was fine...it went right up the hill???
Hhahahahaha has anyone ever heard such wierd shit? I have a FULL to the top tank of gas and It is NOT the PUMP cause I thought that too, so I put the stocker back in and it did the same thing.
Does it sound like my ECU is bad? whatever it is, it has to RESET with the KEY OFF for a minute before I can restart it...It almost seems like the power is being cut off to my fuel pump. anyone ever had these symptoms

try using a lower gear.
To me it sounds like when I had ignition problems. Try new plugs, if that doesn't work try new wires.
check to see if your coil is still good too.

I have Brand new plugs wires and a new MSD coil. Its not a low RPM stall out...IT JUST SHUTS OFF, LIKE THE FUEL IS CUT OFF. and then when I go to restart it I don't hear the fuel pump like normal till I let it reset with the key off. then I turn the key back on and I hear the fuel pump prime and it starts right up. Its like the fuel pump is losing power.

If the pump is loosing power then it certainly would cause problems. I would check the wiring to the pump. If you have a bad connection to it when you go uphill it could be changing the position of the wire to the pump and be causing it to lose connection. Or it could be a bad pump. Get a volt/Ohm meter and test it out, you don't have to pull the pump. Just back probe the connections on top of the pump. You can tell from that if you have a bad ground or bad power side wire. If they are good then try wiggling the wire and see if you get different readings unless you have some clips that you could connect them to and have a passenger read the meter while you drive. This might be a good time to do the fuel pump rewire, it might fix the problem and if it doesn't then you just have an upgraded power feed to the pump. Let us know.
EDIT: Could be fuel filter or cloged/bad injectors or O2 sensor also. Start with the simplest and work to the most difficult.

it's a 95, right? it's the ECU.

No I'm a 1999 thats whats weird....I feel like its the ECU. The one time it stalled I opened the hood and the ECU was buzzing kinda loud. the car starts and idles great but when I drive it up hill it cuts out. and when I rev it up to 2000rpm and let it decelerate it kinda makes this popping sound....If you click the link I have a sound clip of it

Alright I changed the fuel filter and its still stalling. The car starts fine and does NOT stall till its warmed up. So I have A new fuel filter A new fuel Pump New ignition coil New Spark plug wires New MAP sensor New IAC Motor New Plugs
All I can Guess is mabye the ECU, Injectors, FPR,
I checked the engine compression and I got a 180 175 169 179 cyl1 cyl2 cyl3 cyl4
Has anyone had a bad ECU in a 1999? I heard it buzzing the one time that it stalled out. and it sounds like the fuel pump shuts off and then when I go to restart the car I don't hear the fuel pump prime. so then I wait about 2 minutes and turn the key...THEN i hear the pump prime and the car starts. Its acting real wierd that why I suspect the ECU....should I just get one and try it? I can get one out of a 1997 for $100

I don't see a front O2 sensor on that list. The fact that it'll go until it warms up and enters closed loop would indicate that.

Yeah thats right...and I did just get a code p0138 02 sensor circut high volts (bank 1 sensor 2) That sounded like the rear 02 sensor? will that make that car stall? I have NO CAT. My 1st 02 sensor is only like 8 inches from the outlet of the turbine wheel. Is that too close to the engine???

I had a problem with my ground on the freeway my car whould shudder. It was my ecu turning on an off with bumps on the road, that would make sense because going up hill the ground would pull off. (loose connection)but going up backwards it is keeping a connection. I dunno but its a cheap fix and worth a look.

Most likely front o2 sensor. The rear code is normal when you have no cat.
Also check the Fuel and ASD relays on the firewall.

Thanks for all the help guys, I acually had a leak aroung my EGR block off plate. I put in a new gasket and the stalling stopped. I have never heard of that happening but it says in my Manual that a faulty EGR valve could cause stalling. Some guys on DSM tuners were trying to tell me but I didn't think that would cause stalling. Well it does, If you have a leaky gasket around the block off plate or EGR valve it will cause random stalling and poor drivability.

Many of the people on 2gnt are also members of tuners just like you. Most of the time they will have similar names also i.e. Slo2gen. Glad you got that taken care of though!
