Hey Guys..


My crank sproket is being a bitch, would it be a good idea to get a torch and heat it up a bit to help pull it off?

Anyone have any other good suggestions? I'm using part cleaner to help get it off.

ehh, dont know if i would presonally use a torch around the crankshaft myself. are you using an impact gun on the puller? spray some wd40 around the inside of it and then pull it off with the puller/impact...?

No.. My compressor is busted, but under warranty so I'll bust that out. How are you guys stopping the puller from spining the crank? I'm stopping it with 2 bolts but they're bending.. works, but not that well.

Damn, I thought it was a good idea :)

nick, take off the oil pan if its still on...use the wooden end of a hammer to jam it into the crank and use it to stop the crank from turning.

heat up the pulley on the INSIDE, try not to make the flames go through the holes there and melt the front main seal on the oil pump. My guess is youre replacing all that shit anyway, so roast it.

use a steering wheel puller and 3 8mm hardened bolts (if i remember right theyre 8mm) with fat washers.

its still likely going to be a bitch, ive even used a cutoff wheel and cut into the pulley (this frees tension and also puts in helpful heat) but obviously, you dont re-use that part.

it'll come off, but a 3 jaw isnt going to work...it just breaks the sprocket from what ive seen. get situated with the steering wheel puller on the sprocket, add some tension and then put it heat with a propane torch. PB blaster will help you break any surface rust thats there.

and if all else fails, smack it with ur cock

This pulley was on there tighter than ANY pulley I have encountered in recent history. Here was my setup.



I used an impact gun to tighten the puller but I have also used a wrench or bar stuck in the bolts to keep it from spinning.

That's exactly what I was looking for, thx Dave. I have two big bolts in the 4th slot of the puller attempting to hold the crank in place... SUCKS! oh wells..

nutshell

keep the crank still by wedging the wooden end of a hammer in the crank and crankcase



also, use a good puller, or your threads are going to die hard. with an impact you'll notice the 6mm bolts starting to bend too. You might have to wedge that too to keep it from turning with the screw. the impact will make it worse, and too much bending you'll shear the 6mm bolts. then you're in for some real fun.

see all the surface rust on Daves picture right there at the joint? PB that shit...let it sit....add heat and once it pops, it should come off fairly easy
