102058, A little advice?
Posted by FastNeon84, Nov-28-06 10:14 AM
Hey guys, the turbo kit that i bought from protekturbos for my 2.0 SOHC Neon will be here shortly. I just have a few questions. im going to run a fully rebuilt block .20 overbore(8.6:1 forged JE pistons, eagle long rod combo, high output oil pump, etc) on a stock head until i get the money to have it rebuilt and race ported/polished. I have a "Comepetiton" stage 3 clutch with the fidanza racing flywheel for the tranny, and a phantom-grip limited slip differential. the only thing about my engine is that it will be about a month or two until i can get the bottom end rebuilt, and it wont probably be until summer 07 until i get the cash for the head rebuild. my questions are:

-Is it safe to go ahead and install the turbo kit on my stock engine and run about 6psi for 2 months until my rebuilt block is ready? (my car has close to 170k miles on it now)

-What size fuel injectors should i get? 24lb,30lb,36lb?

-After the block swap, how much abuse do u think my engine could handle?(i plan on running 12-14psi daily driven, and maybe tweak it up to 22psi when i go to the track)

-Is it safe to run a 50-75shot of nitrous on this setup?

any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

You need to do a compression test to see if it is ok to turbo the motor you have now, if you have good compression then go for it, if it blows up oh well you've got another motor comming. The size fuel injectors depends on all of your other mods, what turbo are you running, how much power are you looking for? The engine should be able to handle what you want to throw at it as long as you let it break in properly, the ignition should be upgraded past 20psi though. As for the nitrous, I would just tune for more boost.

garret t3/4..if you go to the protekturbos.com website it should tell you all the specs, if you wanna go check it out. im shooting for mid 12s with just the bottom end rebuild-if possible, but 13s will satisfy me for now, knowing that my car stock runs 16.9

but what is a good compression ratio for my stock block? if i decide to do this, im gonna probably "baby" it until i get the rebuild done.

- You should be able to run your turbo setup on your stock block no problem at only 6psi. Like mentioned above, do a compression check. Look at the specs for a SOHC Neon and find out what it should be. I don't know if it's different than a 420A eclipse, but ours is usually around 180.

- 30lb injectors should be fine. I have a set for sale if your interested.

- 12-14psi daily should be easily handled by the motor you've described. If you want 22psi at the track your going to have to some serious fuel work and the 30lber's I mentioned above won't cut it.

- I hate nitrious - it's artifical power in my opinion. I'd say don't bother, but it's your car.

aight cool. thanks for the help & advice guys.

the biggest injectors ive seen for my car were 36lb ones. But how much for the ones you have and what brand? Maybe i wont rn 22psi...im just looking maybe to break 12s in the quarter...shooting for about 325-350whp, and ill be satisfied. you're right about the whole NOS thing..but its just something ive wanted for a while..just want to see how it feels pressing the button ;).

by the way, sweet ride man, im in the process of going back to the stock look with maybe poly-urethane lips on the front and back bumper. fiberglass kits make me sick now, and im tired of the one i had on. i know this is mostly an eclipse forum, but if you know anyone with a 1st gen neon, im selling my kit for 225 plus shipping.

Not trying to sway your opinion, but how do you figure nitrous is artificial? It works on the same point as any FI (Forced Induction) system: it puts more oxygen in the cylinder for more fire. You have to compensate with more fuel, much the same as FI. However, nitrous helps lower intake charge temps, too, which helps against detonation. There's nothing artificial about it, nitrous-oxide yields more oxygen than atmospheric air, and was actually used in WW-II in high-altitude planes where there's less oxygen.

I guess he just means that it's not always there you have to press a button and refill your nitrous tank every so often. You probably will need bigger than 36lb injectors to make 350whp, I would go with maybe some 680's. I don't know about neons but the 4g63 injectors work with the eclipse 420a if you use the 420a o-rings.
