Posted by ronjeremy525, Nov-26-06 07:05 PM
driving from subway on friday night i pulled out of the parking lot and broke a lower control arm ball joint. got that fixed for 35$ at a junk yard. the problem is the inner boot ripped when the wheel came out, and i was wondering if anyone has experience replacing one and how??

THe easy way is you can get a split boot from vatozone for 15.00. You install it with the axle on the car.

Replacing with a oes style boot requires disassembling the axle and its a bit tricky at times.

I had that happen too this summer. I rarely let anyone touch my car, but I had that done at a local ma and pa mechanic and they only charged me like 60 bucks for the whole deal.

I would gladly pay $60 to have someone change my CV axle boot. It is not fun. You gotta remove the axle, then stretch the crap out of the new boot to fit over the triple pivoting thing from hell.

The cheap ones from autozone suck. They are not water tight whatsoever, they have a seam and you "button" it shut. The only advantage is they can be installed without removing the axle. I see them only as a quick fix.

Mine was ripped too when I pulled my motor out. I don't know how long it had been ripped but I got a new kit from satan for relatively inexspensive and did it myself. Not too hard, took me maybe 30 mins.

You dont have to stretch the boot at all nate, Thats putting the boot on wrong. The outer CV comes apart or rather the Axle will slide out of the CV. The axle is held in with a spring clip similer to the one that holds the axle in the Diff.

If you already got a new lower control arm from the junkyard, why didn't you get a new axle, too?
