Hey all,
I just got my head back on a couple of days ago and since my Timing Belt hadn't broke I was going to try a different way of putting on without the tensioner being help down or removing the crank pulley...

Well that didn't work out so now I've removed the motor mount but there's no way possible I can get my 3 jaw-puller onto the crank pulley so that I can get at the crank/timing/oil pump sprocket..

If anyone has any helpful tips, hints, or suggestions, or even telling me something you ran into while doing it, anything will help.

Is it an issue of still not having enough room to get the puller on there? If so then take off the cross member and the front motor mount which might free up enough room. You are prolly going to have to take off the rear motor mount as well though, then you should have plenty of room to work with.

Edit: you might check out dino's link http://www.nochoads.org/files/ and hes got the service manual scanned in. There is a 420a engine overhaul link on his site which tells how to change the timing belt and water pump.

You need to undo the front and passenger side motor mounts in order to have room to get to that pulley. Also, DO NOT USE SOME BEAT ASS 3-JAW PULLER YOU HAVE LYING AROUND YOUR GARAGE. Go to Autozone, pay them the $30 deposit (which they will refund you 100% when done) for the Chrysler Harmonic Damper Puller. It is a lot like a 3-jaw puller, but it will work without breaking your pulley or tool. Time and again, we all see people who think they know what's up complain and cry that they just can't get this pulley off, when they haven't bothered to use the right tool.

Oh yeah, and no more of this McGuyver shit when it comes to your timing belt, man. That's a good way to destroy your engine. Download the manual and follow the proceedure. Not only is it easier, it's cheaper, too.

I was hoping I didnt have to remove the front/back motor mount but I guess I do. The passenger isn't enough I guess.

I've done the timing belt before but the engine was on a stand, not in the car. I have the book but I had been looking for a way to cut corners haha, sometimes the book goes into unnecassary detail or not enough.

I usewd the 3-jaw when I took off the crankpulley when it was out, I don't think it messed it up, or is the harmonic damper tool with the bolt you screw with a wrench, and the arms are adjustable in a lot of different ways.

If autozone has a better one I'll go rent it though.

I used a random 3-jaw puller that demolished my stock pulley during my first rebuild, booo. When I swapped in the fully built motor a few months later, I didn't wanna even touch my AF/X with any piece of junk...the hobby shop on base had the "special tool" and it was fucking butter baby!

it is possible with just removing the passenger mount....ive done 2 this way. read the writeups. just drop the entire engine down. i had plenty of working room

3 arm 5 ton puller has alway worked for me. Let the motor down off the passenger side and again I have always had enough room. If it really isn't enough, I'd drop the crossmember to gain some extra, I can't believe you'd need more.

I have enough room dropping it down on the passenger side, i dont have the right insert for the harmonic puller so I'm gonna have to figure something out. Thanks for the help though guys.
