Well my 420a had a pretty tragic death the other day.
I was driving up a small hill and started hearing this small clinking noise coming from my engine. Sounded a metal object moving around in the engine, and then soon after like within 30 seconds, the engine died and i hear coolant splatter all over the ground.

The car is in my garage now.. engine will crank but won't start... not sure where to start to diagnose this problem. My car was always leaking oil and burning oil pretty badly. The backside of the engine plus the front axle is always covered in oil.

Any suggestions on what i should check first? do you think this engine is revivable or does it sound like I broke something pretty bad?

which means to fix it i need to pull the engine for a total rebuild?

Depending on if it is a rod, the fact that there was coolant pouring onto the ground would lead me to belive that you punched a hole in the block. That tends to make a block unusable.

Or your water pump failed and now your out of time and your valves are bent.

so i guess i should start by taking the valve cover off and the head off to see if i can spot what's wrong and then eventually pull the whole engine out if it indeed is the rod or a hole in the block?

Exactly.

SHould be pretty easy to tell if there's a hole in the block. Look behind the starter, and follow the line it makes all the way around and see if there's a hole. They'll usually dimple / puncture the oil pan pretty good too.

It's also pretty effing loud when a rod goes.
