First off im new to the whole forum thing so bear with me.

I just bought this 95 Eclipse for $500 so i knew that it was going to have some problems.

When i start the car(if it starts) it sputters and burps. i dont know a whole lot about cars so i dont know what this could be. Usually the car will only start once every few hours. Also it has some issues with overheating while idleing. I think the overheating may be caused the the short ram intake that was in the car when i bought it. The last thing i can think of off the top of my head is the fact that the RPMs have a problem dropping off imidiatly when shifting or even sitting idle and giving it barely any gas. any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated

Everything else aside, i'm curious as to the logic behind a short ram intake causing the car to overheat. I'd like to hear that one.

Search for "keydance" and post up any codes you get once your perform it. That'll help us tell you what to fix.

The logic behind the short ram causing the overheating is that i think it may have been installed wrong so it might not be getting the air flow it should be.

Kinda hard to install a short ram wrong. is it coming out of the hood? if so that's wrong. otherwise, they tend to only go in one way.

An intake has never caused a 2GNT to overheat in the history of 2GNT as I'm aware, unless it was crammed through the radiaotr fans by an angry owner.

Just sayin.

So. Do the keydance and tell us what codes you get, and we'll tell you what's wrong. Expect a 12 and a 55 at the start amd end of the codes, respectively.

If your shortram is the cause of your overheating, I'll give you my car free of charge with all shipping costs covered - You'll have a car with no overheating problems whatsoever.

Anyhow, there are lots of things to check with overheating, which are easy fixes. Do a search on "overheating" - you'll get more than enough info on that.

Like Dino said, do the keydance and see what codes you get, considering the check engine light is on of course.

First off give your car that tune-up check and full service maintence.
This is what I did to my 97 gs.
list:
Change all your fluids, Flush and fill your radiator,change your filter/oil(SYntech)grease all suspension tobe lubed, transfer.case/differential. Change your Transmission Filter/ Fluid(Advance ATF+3)Change your Thermostat,water Pump- This could solve your overheating problems, Change your spark pluugs /wires.
Your ideling problem could be the timing so, change the timing belt kit completly (whole thing) while your at it change those belts as well.

I hope this would gudie you so what/ fix your prblems too.

sounds like mine when i bought it. check you IAC (idle air control), all vac hoses coming from the TB (throttle body) and intake manifold, including all lines coming/ going to the Valve cover ( i forget what that liine is called) , run a lil seafoam thru it and get back to us. OH also, spark plugs are key in these cases, also one more thing: mine had a huge vac leak thru the TB gasket, wrap ur hand around it (where it meets the manifold) and u should feel the succion, my leak was so bad it pinched the palm of my hand and riped alil of skin off :7

Ok so i went to do the "keydance" and the light doesnt come on. so i assume that the light has either been removed or it is burnt out. so i'll be replacing that this week sometime and i'll get back to you all after that. thanks for the help so far

Hey there Bobbo, welcome to the forum (friend of mine from back in 8th grade).


I went with him to look at the car before he bought it. Almost all of the hard vacuum lines were rusted through, so he replaced all of those (I think). Some more lines were cracked and leaking, I'm assuming he replaced those, he's changed out his plugs and wires. And yes the short ram is installed correctly, you can scratch that of your list. Are you getting any check engine light when the car is on? Were you getting a code 12 and 55 with the keydance or nothing at all? Are you sure you did it right? I wish I was closer to home so I could come help you out. But with all the knowledge on this site I think you're in good hands. Just don't say anything else stupid like a short ram making your car overheat =).

About the overheating, are the radiator fans turning on? Have you replaced the thermostat and radiator cap? How does the coolant level look, how does the coolant itself look?

So the check engine light was in fact removed. no doubt to pass inspections. the SRS light and the low coolant light were also missing. im replacing those lights most likely tonight after stoping by advance auto to pick the bulbs up then i will do the "key dance" and check the codes

i couldnt find the connectors all i could find were the bulbs so i switched out one of the back lights for the check engine light and ended up with the codes 22 and 36.

Well code 22 is coolant temperature sensor voltage too low, a bad temp sensor can cause overheating. And code 36 is Pulsed secondary air injection solenoid circuit, don't really know anything about that.

So the car isn't starting at all now?

Wont start at all. its sitting in the parking lot at work. i replaced the battery cause it was... pitiful... but that didnt help anything. the starter sounds like its turning over but it has a drawn out sound when i let off

Totally unhooked the coolant sensor wire and the damn car started up. i assume the sensor is shorted out. im gonna replace it and see how all that goes. then we'll deal with the smoke coming out of the exaust

What colors the smoke? I guess you get what you pay for haha 500 bucks.

check the radiator mine was pluged and the temp would creep while sitting there. When on the freeway it was cool.
