The post I am doing is for my brother, he has a 95 RS, he had to buy a new motor because his was junk, got it from somewhere online but anyways after the install they had trouble with the cam/crank sensor so they changed both of them and now it starts up but the car keeps flooding out they said. I havent been down to his house yet to see but he asked me to post this on here because I told him the best 2g guys are on this site and can help, he is thinking there is gas in the spark plug wells or something, they got it to start and run, but with unbelievable amount of black smoke rolling out of the exhaust, so they figured it would just run bad for a few minutes, well they let it run, didnt get any better, and then fire came out of the exhaust and was burning the back bumper, they put out the fire with some water, he said it looked like it was coming from the cat,i dunno. but he hasnt messed with it since, what could be causing this? anyone had this experience?

Fire? He's got to be getting CELs for that. Have him do a keydance and tell you what codes he gets.

ill check and see when he gets off ... anyone else got something?

Tell him to turn off the flame thrower kit LOL! If he's getting a fire coming through the cat and out the tailpipe that means he has flooded the cylindars with so much fuel it's gone out the exhaust and past the cat. and caught fire there. At this point that engine is trash anyways. Me thinks there is more to this than he is telling you?

Check the oil to make sure no gas has washed by the rings, if it flooded that bad then I'd bet there's gas in the oil. I would highly doubt there's gas in the spark plug wells, if that were the case then your brother has a story to post for posterities sake, because I can't imagine any scenario short of a Benny Hill skit getting something like that to happen. Keep us posted.

he bought it from some place online, 950 bucks shipped to his door, says it has like 60xxx miles on it ... they are thinking that they are just getting too much gas, but fire was involved and alot of black smoke ... that cant be good!

i spoke to my brother, he said the fire did not come out of the pipe, but he could see the blaze, in about the middle of his exhaust system, dont know what caused it, just a small blaze they put out...he says its getting too much gas or so he thinks ... he says his intake manifold is ice cold after a few mins of running ... this good or bad?

ok a little more information might be required. did he buy a compleat motor??? with IM and everything???? if so they could have oversized injectors. if thats the case no wonder its fludding so badly. im assuming he has no way to controle fuel anyway or a FPR. that would be one of the first things i would check.

nah bro hes got nothing to do anything like that .. he threw a rod in his original motor and finally found a motor he could use, complete motor, head and all .. he is totally lost here. i dunno if the injectors are oversized or not, but i do know the motor didnt come out of an eclipse, i believe its from a sebring but not 100% sure, are there any small differences?

what im saying is someone might have put bigger injectors in the motor. its not hard to check if there the stock injectors. but i dont really see how that much fuel can get into the motor any other way.

i gotcha .. i'll ask him when i call him and see if he knows anything about that, im going down for the weekend, ill find out first hand what it does. He got a 30day warranty with that motor so if its bad then it should be able to be replaced

Well guys i went down to see my brother and seen the car, he got it to start up and it does indeed blow out ALOT of black smoke, but after a few minutes it stopped smoking, but was making hella noise, he decided to drive it around the black, if he let off the gas for more than id say 3 seconds the car would die. but we were checking, on the 95 models i do believe the fuel pressure regulator is a part of the fuel rail, but on 96-99 it is NOT part of the rail and is under the back seat, well this motor is obviously out of a 96-99 because it isnt part of the rail, my stepdad seems to think that is what the problem is, the engine is getting too much fuel and it is having trouble buring it or something, but when the car gets to about 30 it does just fine until you let off the pedal, any idea anyone?

Yup. Use your old rail. But I'm curious how'd you hook it all up ... what'd you connect the return line to?

i wasnt there when they installed the motor or did any work on it when it failed, i helped try to pinpoint the problem this weekend while i visited, they got the fuel rail out tonight and gonna put the old fuel rail from the 95 motor back in and see if that works.

That's a "who'd have thought of that?!?" problem. Keep us posted.

A couple of things here. Just to be sure that we're on the same page; the smoke, the fire, the noise etc is because there is too much fuel (I know that sounds a little obvious, but I'm not so sure that it was understood). As someone previously stated, raw fuel got into the exhaust and caught fire. That, in and of itself, is not that big of a deal (provided he got it out and he doesn't continue to run it this way). Obviously, he is going in the direction of fixing it. I STRONGLY advise that he does not take it around the block until he is sure he has fixed the problem. If he does take it on the road, he stands a pretty good chance of being that car on the side of the road that everyone stares at, as it is engulfed in flames. At home, he can at least extinguish a fire. On the road it's a whole lot tougher.

Also, he needs to change his oil immediately. With that amount of fuel going in you definitely have fuel in your oil. That does not agree with any of your oiling system.
