The two cam gears marking should face each other, at the same time the oil pump sprocket should line up with marking on the block when the tension is set. Give it two revolutions, and if all still line up, you are good to go.
VFAQ has a really good write up on this.

One step further - Intake cam should read "2.0 FRONT" or whatever right-side-up, while the exhaust cam should have it up-side-down. When you are all done and have pulled the pin on the tensioner, all marks must line up exactly. Half a tooth off is not goo enough.

Enjoy.

Then you have a different problem. it should still start, even if the cams are three teeth off. Run like ass, but it'd start.

True. Unless he has a cam 180* out. Been there. Done that.
I just went out and took a picture of mine. She's timed right, but I just parked the car and didn't manually move the belt. (As hot as it is outside? Fuck that.) But you can see what I'm talking about with regards to the way the wording lines up.
EDIT: The fact that you have that "006" or whatever at the top on the exhaust gear leads me to believe you've got "2.0 FRONT" at the bottom, just like it is on the intake gear.

Yes. I know. My cam seals are leaking. So is my head gasket and PCV valve. I have a 420A for an oil filter. It's not in the engine long enough to get dirty. x(

ok guys i figured it.....but bad news... i inspected everything closely when i took it all off. but not closly enuff. the first problem was the crank was 180 degrees off. then i ran a compression test because it would act like it was gana start but would never fully crank. well

............................. so looks like a valve job is due....

Keep your head up, bro. You're not the only one with a dead engine this weekend. Two years ago, I lost a piston on Labor Day weekend and this weekend, I've already heard about two cases of 420A hydrolocking. There is a girl around here somewhere who got 30psi across the board. Ouch.
Now is when you get to dig your heels in and turn this mother out. You can do it. You have the technology!
EDIT: Lucky you that you didn't lose a $400 forged piston in the process! http://az2gnt.net/DR1665/Daisy/420A/bustedWiseco.JP G

Sorry to hear that, man. But, if it's any consolation, prettty much everyone on here has done one goofy thing or another in the process of learning.....and they are all stronger for it.
Keep yur chin up.

oh im fine i guess lol. moneys money....you can always make more. im pulling the head AGAIN! tommrow and puting it in the shop monday to be pressure tested shaved and a 3 angle valve job and all 16 new valves. hopefully ill have it back by wednesday at the latest.
Yes i've read on quite a few forums about people hydrolocking...its that damn huricane bringing in all this weather...it sucks......\
You know the worst part about this. i finaly got my stage 1 tranny in and havent even drivein it yet..... actually i've done quite a few things in the 2 weeks its been parked.....msd coil and wires,55mm TB, and ported intake manni.....so it should actually feel alot better when i get it running. oh one more question do you guys think i should replace the piston rings because the first 2 cylinders have very very good compression for eing cold do you think it needs it?? the motor only has 70k on it
Edit- oh yea you know that little black box that bolts onto the back of the IM it has 2 vacume lines going to it. ido you have to have it?? i know theres some vacume lines you can get rid of but is that some of them?

100796, RE: timeing marks?? Posted by Star Turbo Talon, Sep-02-06 07:47 PM
That black box is for your cruise control, if you want cruise then you must have it.
I just got the head back on mine. Elective Head gasket replacement....lol What can i say, i am anal about HG oil leaks. Due to driggs misfortune is why I refuse to start it till after Labor day...lol
Look at it this way, by the time you are done you are going to be that much better at the timing process. After your second one it gets much easier.

I'm still driving around nervous that something else is going to happen. Hopefully this weekend I can get that damn Galant running so I can start tearing into Daisy.
OP - you're really going to notice a difference when you take that thing back out on the road. Looks like you've got some decent mods put together. :thumbsup

Very true.. I learned that a spun bearing can cause two softball sized holes in the side of your block.

100855, RE: timeing marks?? Posted by Star Turbo Talon, Sep-06-06 06:32 PM
With that amount of patience and perseverance, you should sell it and buy a car with a warrenty. DSM's are for people who enjoy working on them. DSM's take knowledge or peopel with the ability to learn a great deal in a short period. You are not the first person to do a timing or head job and you will not be the last.
I will give you 500.00 for it. It doesnt run so i cant offer you anything higher
Have a nice day.
