ok so im p/p'n my head with the SA deluxe porting kit.. and a combination of an air grinder and a dremel. so im wondering for those of us who did their own port/ polish job..what did you do to clean up around the valve guide? cuz that spot is sort of a bitch to get to. and will it really hurt to have the intake side polished smooth? cuz right now i got a quite nice polish going on it...didnt even really intend for it to get there..but it did. and next...where can i find that dremel extension i keep hearing about for porting out the IM?

Well, personally I would suggest taking it to a professional to have it ported, as there is a lot more to porting then just hogging out material, and with our engine, radius is key. But since you've already started, fuck the Dremel, I have no idea why people try to port aluminum and iron with a Dremel. Get on Summit's website and look-up in their tools section porting bits. They've got a set with 6-10" shanks on them so you can go deep into things, thats the one to get. You should probably also get the abrasive bits, rather than the carbide, as carbide bits can gouge the ports if you aren't very experienced.

yeah, i would have had it done professionally, but i wasnt having any luck finding a place to do it locally, and i wasnt about to ship the head out of state. besides all im aiming for is just smoothing out the castings and gasket matching it. im almost done with the intake side..and then on to the exhaust...which looks to be a whore... damn mismatched ports. and damn valves too...those things are a pain in the butt to get out. i dont even wanna think about getting them back in...any suggestions? i used the old hammer and socket trick to remove them. would cutting the side out of a socket and using a standard valve spring comrpressor work?

That is exactly what I was going to suggest, you could buy a tool from Sears, but that's money, and a giant C-clamp with the ol' sectioned socket does the same job.

I'd show you a pic of my set-up but I just lent it out. Very simple; big C-clamp and I use 1" (?) pipe with a notch cut out for access to the keepers. Works great. Used it many times. Basically free if you gots the clamp.
