you can do use a hammer, but if you do use something like the rag pictured above to soften the blow and make sure to use a dead blow hammer as pictured above. You only want to tap it on til you can turn the STOCK bolt (it's a hardened bolt and a few guys have snapped the longer hardware store bolts while tightening them because they are not as strong) in 7-10 full rotations before drawing it the rest of the way in with the bolt.
