Did you loosen the nut and then turn the plate clockwise until it stops? Then put the belt on and try it, mine aligned perfectly after doing that. But you said you were following the directions, and if that is the case... I don't know.

If the engine is still in the car and you have another person helping you, here is a great tip: That rubber plug/grommet in the fender well, take that out, when I did it gave a PERFECT view of the alignment tang on the tensioner.
