There are 2 of these. One in the front (by the front mount) and one in the back (next to the axle. Both have a bolt in the tranny and a bolt into the engine block). As stated previously, you can run without them (a lot like the intake supports) but I don't. It is support for the lower part of the tranny to engine connection. Though there is little stress here, it is two of the 6 bolts that holds the tranny to the engine (not counting the starter). I like the added support in a torquey engine like ours (especially at the track).

But can you run without them? Sure.
