8612, input shaft question
Posted by 98VengeI4, Oct-17-10 08:21 PM
When I pressed apart the input and output shafts from the trans housing some of the parts fell off of the input shaft. I am not good with names of trans parts but 3 ball bearings and 3 little springs and 3 little metal pieces with holes in the middle came off of this part of the shaft, so if someone could explain how to put those back together and pics or how to reassemble the outer end of the input shaft, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You will need ot take the shaft apart. Those are the ball detents for the outer slider. there are 2 sliders on the shaft and I suspect those are from the 5th gear slider which is the first one you see when you stand the shaft up (rear most of the case.)

Trick to putting them together is to hold the assembly in your hand and unse three fingers to hold the spring, square slide piece and ball seated in the assembly then with your other hand align and slider the outer slider over the three detents. It can be tricky but once you figure it out, its easy.

Is that the order they go in from the middle outwards? springs first, metal pieces and then the balls? How do you manage to get them in? The springs always seem to fall out. And is there some sort of trick to the metal pieces?

Thanks so much!

Yes - Spring, metal shim, ball.

The trick is how you hold it together as you slide the slider over the assy.

You know how you hold a fastball with three fingers? Well I do the same with the spring, metal shim and ball. Hold all three with three fingers of the same hand. use your other hand to pick up the outer slider and squeeze it over the ball detents as you force your three fingers out of the way.

Aside from a video i cant really explain it any better.

Sometimes a little grease will help hold it together, but as Terry said just use 3 fingers to push them in while you pull the sleeve down over them.
