I've searched but have never really been satisfied with the results... So here goes. What all would be involved in swapping the taller 5th/final drive gears from the neon SOHC tranny into my eclipse? Top speed racing here i come....

If you want to do it the easy way, buy an entire SOHC Neon tranny, take off the clutch housing, and replace it with your 2GNT clutch housing. That's the real basic way of explaining it, however, as you'd still need someone to set your diff preload.. it'd probably be better to have someone else do the actual trans work.
As far as just swapping the gears, i don't know.. Murix? Armond?

If you swap the whole trans you will also get the 3.55 final drive ratio. I assume you are looking to just get the .79 over the .81, 5th gear swapped (something I want to do) but keep the higher final drive for accelleration. As far as I know the only way to do this is to pull out the gears and swap the 5th gear, not an easy thing. BUt there may be an easier way. Armond has done this, so...

Actually, I want the lower final drive as well... I do a lot of highway driving, and am also wanting to do some bonneville racing as well.

The 5th gear is actually .72 not .79
I did this swap in my car right before I sold it because I was able to get the tranny for $350 instead of $700 for an 2GNT tranny. I did the bell housing swap method.
