Back with another transimission question. Son finally replaced the cracked clutch release arm that had caused him so much grief. Now after about 100 miles, the input shaft bearing failed and we were able to find a used trans for a reasonable price. While cleaning it up, son found the following markings on the case and wondered what they meant. Anyone able to shed some light on this? The markings read:

New Venture Gear
NV-T350
4670890
N 890 2008 0255

The tranny in our cars is the NV-T350. NV is New Venture. The other numbers are most likely production numbers. There is a way to make sure its not a Neon trans, but Im not sure on that.

That helps a bit. Any ideas on how to interpret the 4 digit date code? No biggie, just wondering how old this trans is. Perhaps the 2008 code means the second month in 1998?

Most likely the Julian date code system. Commonly used with auto parts due to its simplicity and it takes up far less space on a label. Very commonly used in the antique auto industry with "Date coded Parts."

4670890 is the trans part number for the non turbo eagle talon (and eclipse)

2008 was made Jan 20th 98 and it was the 255 trans rolling down the assembly line.

I suppose I was expecting a fifth or sixth digit in the code. If the first two digits are for the day of the month and the last digit is for the year and the third digit is the month, then what happens when you get to the 12th month or if production lasts over 10 years? Perhaps it doesn't matter because they just look at the incremented transmission numbers along with the date to determine the actual manufacturing date. That must be it. Thanks again for the help.

3 digit Day codes go by the 365 days a year. So this trans was made on the 20th day of 1998.

Now some manufacturers use the day codes as a work week code although according to all the research i have done regarding date coded parts that is not typically done by autoparts manufacturers. Stranger things have happened though.
