7761, I need help on a clutch purchase decision Posted by 420agreenvilleSC, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
A local shop can offer me a competition clutch stg 4 for $515. I originally was saving and wanted to go with southbend's FE clutch cryo treated which is around $600 total. So there's the dilemma. Imagine if it were your own money and you were building a reliable, high HP setup, what would you do...
EDIT: This "price" of the local shop is good till Friday

Sorry, I gotta take well known and highly regarded over "a local shop" with a no name brand.

Yeah, their 'competition" clutch is probably one off of ebay for 200 bucks.
Go for the South Bend

i'm not understanding why people aren't getting this. It's a stg4 competition. http://www.competitionclutch.com/products/index.php?id=300 the 0620 series... not ebay. if it were, there'd be no decision problem.

Lol, I thought this was some garage place that said they can make you a "competition clutch. Let's call it a stage 4", lol.
So its a Comp clutch. Ok name with the 4g63's, but I will stick with my original choice. I have just seen too much support and good product for our clutches from South Bend.

Cant go wrong with south bend. I have one of their stage 4 clutches and it is light as a feather and engages really nicely.

Resurrecting this old thread to post some updated info.
So it's looking like the southbend (bought in '09) has begun showing signs of slipping, but only when the engine/trans is not fully warmed up and occurs in conditions during peak HP/Tq @8-9psi boost (3k-4k RPMs). It's intermittent so will keep a close eye on it.
Aside from a couple launches, it's been babied since installed and have experienced zero issues. No "clutch braking" on inclined stop lights, no burnouts, nothing like that - just simple/easy daily driving. It hasn't given up completely yet and until then, it's still been great clutch and vouch for Southbend's quality.
In short, looks like it lasted roughly 9 1/2 years (70k miles, best guess). I hope this helps someone in terms of lifespan.
