7262, Shift Arm Weight?

I asked this on Talk, but Im sure the N/A guys would have a better idea of what this is. There is some sort of weight at the end of my gear selector lever on the transmission. Does anyone know what exactly it does? I was thinking it helps the throw to the next gear but Im not sure, and Ive never seen it before.
The dirty tranny is the old one and the clean one is the new one that has the weight on it.

I think it was added to the later model transmissions. Best I can figure is it lessens the shifter lever from jiggling around and possibly for shifter feel. Kinda liek how a weighted shifter knob works.

IMO, serves absolutely no purpose. Cut it off if it bugs you.
