under light throttle or turning is the majority of the time when my 3rd gear pops out. it's gotten to the point that when i'm turning in 3rd i put my hand on the shifter and hold it in. does anyone know what this could be? some people have told me synchros, other people have said that my transmission is fubar, and to just get a replacement. when i try to reverse it sometimes takes me a few tries of going from neutral to reverse to get it in. when it doesn't catch, when i start to slip the clutch, my car makes a little grinding noise. i'm getting serious about modding my car so the little problems like these need to be taken care of.

Don't jump to major problems just yet. Check linkage alignment and linkage bushing condition. If the linkage is misadjusted it might not be fullyholding and the motor rocking pulls it out, or if teh bushings are bad same thing. Is there a lot of play in the shifter?

If it is forcfully popping out of gear, it is because the dog teeth on your syncro ring are damaged to the point that they can no longer hold the gear. Basically, your syncro ring is foobar. While it is repairable, it is much cheaper to find a replacement transmission than to attempt to have the transmission repaired. There is no such thing as a transmission shop that is not crooked. They will try to screw you in any way they can to make a buck. I've been told this straight from a transmission specialist who has been in the business for 20+ years. Just buy a junkyard trans, swap it in, and learn how to shift so you don't break it again ;-)

i have the SAME problem, just in 5th. I even get the same gettin into reverse prob. someone said dog teeth. Please, someone let us know. how do you check the linkage? btw, when i have it in 5th, i also can feel the engine kick the stick back, not all the way, but it moves it a round a little.

I have trouble getting into reverse sometimes also..no other problems though. i thought it was normal, being that there is no synchro on the reverse gear. can anyone verify this?

Reverse is not syncronized. That is why it is both hard to get into sometimes, and why it whines when you start getting some speed in reverse -it uses a straight toothed gear as opposed to a quieter, spiral cut gear.

yeah, i've got that same problem getting the shifter into reverse right away. When that happens, I throw it in 1st and then go to reverse. Never fails.

do you think i have enough time left on my current transmission to grab one from the junkyard and send it to advanced racing dynamics to get it checked out and perhaps strengthened some?

Certainly. Depends on how long you can hold it in third gear.. The dog teeth are already likely destroyed. it's probably not going to get much worse. (until it flys apart and destroys whole city blocks with its wrath! haha)

great! typically i don't have to hold it at all :D

this gives me a good excuse to get a new transmission. i pretty much need a new everything cuz my car has so many miles

I have the same problem but I grind 3rd and 5th gear pop out.

Don't say 5th gear popout near a 4g63 owner they'll have you rip the side plate off the tranny to find nothing usefull.

Any one know of a rebuilt kit? Or part place to order the syncs and or possibly gears from?
