alright so heres the deal, when i shift down to 2,4,and reverse the gear doesnt engage all the the time. when i shift into 1,3,and 5th everthing seems normal and i feel it go into gear but when going into the other gears it feels as if its not falling into place. also the shifter is sitting in a slanted position unless i nudge it in the right position and also when going back into nuetral from 2nd 4th or reverse i hear and feel a slight click and jump in the shifter.

so i thougt it was something in the shifter assembly and when i looked at it i noticed the shifter had some play and the bushings seemed worn down. so i replaced the whole shifter assembly but i still got the problem. i then looked at the cables going from the shifter to the tranny and they also have play so im wondering if its the cables or the tranny itself.

what do you guys think??

Check that the clips holding the cables are still in place, both at the transmission and behind the shifter assembly.

Using the two shift levers on the top of the transmission to shift into 1,2,3,4,5, and reverse to make sure its going into gear all the way. This will tell you if its an internal prob or shift linkage.

This in my opinion should be the next thing you do instead of replacing anything. I had a very similar problem to yours, and what it came down to was the bracket on the trans where the cable clips seat against was bent, so the clips kept falling out. At first glance i didn't think about it because the linkage was still connected to the shifter arms on the trans, but then i realized the clip was gone, and it was putting pressure on the cable.

Your shifter cables are loose or are missing the clips on the trans-side bracket.
