So here it goes. Just got done with a rebuild of the engine and tossed a new clutch in for the hell of it. 4th has always grinded a tiny bit if I don't double clutch it in. I let my friend drive my car on a roadtrip back from Prescott and he went to shift into 4th and it kicked into 2nd with a real bad grinding. Of course my rpms hit the roof (I've blown a clutch right after the rebuild doing the EXACT same thing) and now 4th won't engage at ALL. The tranny has 160k on it and I'm just assuming it's time for it to go. 3rd also feels funny now and grinds like 4th used to without a 2x clutch. I'm pretty sure the tranny is fucked but I just wanted a few opinions before I start searching for a new box and install it.
One other really weird sidenote I've got: If you TRY to shift into fourth it just vibrates real bad on the shifter, and the weird part is that if you hold the clutch down and just push the shifter on the edge of 4th gear you can feel the axles turning, all the way to a dead stop. I can literally feel the rotation of my wheels moving in the vibration down to a stop (I hope thjat made sense it's hard to describe). With the clutch in that sounds like some odd stuff to me but we'll see. Thanks guys

Feeling the axles...I know what you mean and I have notivced that before in other tranny's. Prolly not the main issue.
The 4th and 3rd shifting mechanism is on the same shift fork. Since you had an issue with 4th and its now gone and now you have an issue with 3rd, i suspect you could have damage to the slider assy or the shift fork. The slider is what moves when you shift from gear to gear. Basically what your looking at is a 3rd and 4th gear rebuild.
4th gear itself has to be changed for sure. since it kicked back at you then the dogs teeth are damaged. I might have a spare 4th gear. You will need both synchro stop rings for 3rd and 4th and a slider assy.
From th edealer its a shit load of money. I suggest you source out parts from a used trans or someone who has the parts laying around. I have some of them, not sure i have all of them.
