6781, what kills the transmission? Posted by halfasss101, Nov-18-07 05:30 PM
I've been wondering, what kills the tranny more, slamming it into gear, or when you slam it into gear real hard and it catches all the rpm's from the engine and drags the engine rpms down? Kind of hard to explain, but i think it makes sense. thanks
p.s.-just so i know what NOT to do

Do you mean slamming it into gear with the clutch engaged?

slamming it into gear with the clutch pedal in. ( i always get it mixed up. i'm pretty sure that when you have the clutch in it is disengaged. I would never slam gears without the clutch

*Launches* and power shifting kill the tranny (which I would never do).

i assume since you put asterick marks around "launches" that hurts it the most? And by power shifting, do you consider that slamming gears without using the clutch or just all around slamming it into gear really hard whether you use the clutch or not?

Slamming it into gear is very hard on the tephlon pads that are on the shift forks. Enough pressure can bend the shift fork and damage the synchro sliders and dogs.
Launches are very hard on the actual gears and sliders.
Two different areas of harsh environment.

So no matter what, there's no way to go "easy" on it unless you're actually easy on it. I know the nv-t350 can handle alot of power and has run 400+hp, but for how long can it handle it? Mine has 104,000 miles on it and i read posts all over this forum about trannys wearing out. How long is it going to last? I know there's no actual time frame. Just a ballpark?

I have disassembled some tranny's at 130 that look new and some that look trashed. No way to tell over a phone/cable line.
