Hey Guys,

My transmission is starting to go out and rather then just break it down and fix it or buy a new one, Im thinking about getting it completely rebuilt. Anyone know any good shops that I could send it to, in order to get it built so it can handle boost and anything else I throw at it later down the road?

I called dogbox racing and they said that it is expensive to rebuild it. AAMCO here in Baltimore quoted me over $1400. I lucked out finding a trans in a junkyard that had a rebuild plate on it, called the company, they rebuilt the transmission two weeks before the car was admitted to the yard.

There is no Shep or TRE tranny for us (if that's what you are looking for). The weak point of our tranny's is our open diff. You could go Quaife, Phantom Grip, or OBX (there are a couple of others out there; Alabama Man and ERT. But those are no longer made).

Quaife; lot's of money but top of the line. Guaranteed for life. I saw them recently for sale price of just under $1000

OBX; actually has a good reputation on the Neon boards (same tranny) as long as you do some modifications first (see rbryant on this board). I just picked one up for $375 brand new. Usually run you about $450.

PG; A semi useful insert that doesn't have the greatest of reputations. MUST have diff saver tabs put on or you stand a pretty good chance of grenading your diff. You can pick these up for as low as $50 used.

Our tranny's can handle boost power. The only problems I have heard about inside the tranny's were from a couple of high powered runners. One was having problems with synchros at over 8500rpm shifts and one was having problems with shift forks with 443whp (?), Both isolated cases.

I have rebuilt several tranny's and they hold up well to a great deal of boost. The critical info is the synchro's and the fluid you use as well as the open diff Mark explained. The basic rebuild kit is 400.00 and that is only the synchro stop rings and bearings. If you have damaged the sliders, forks, or gears then the dealer is the only place to source out new parts. If you damage 1st or 2nd then you are in for an entire output shaft which is 1200.00. Now thats not saying that 1st or 2nd synchro cant be replaced but if the gears themselves are shot, you are screwwed. I do have a trans freshly rebuilt for sale if your interested.
