6377, gears/clutch questions Posted by KnightHawk434th, May-13-07 08:20 PM
I'm new to DSMs and this site so before I post my questions I'll give a brief intro. My name is Ben Smith, I'm 18 years and have had my 1999 Eclipse RS for a little over a year. I've done small mods, like CAI system and a performance IAT module, and now I'm starting to get into the big time mods.
I've been told by many people, to get aftermarket performance gears for my 5spd. I've tried searching and cannot find gears alone...only been able to find sites to rebuild transmissions with performance packages, but that shit gets expensive quick. Does anyone know where I can find a nice set of high performance gears that are inexpensive for my tranny?
I would like to start rebuilding my engine and tranny piece by piece before I slap a turbo on it in a year...right now my next mod is a South Bend Clutch DXD series kit. I've also read that the stock 2.0L 420A uses a modular clutch system...so I'm assuming that is the type of clutch kit I need, correct? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
-Ben

Ben, The trans is strong enough as it is so if you want to upgrade the trans at all look into a quaife or retrofit LSD. Good choice on the clutch.
Yes the eclipse is a modular clutch.
Next thing is to remove the "performance IAT chip". All that does is trick the ECU into thinking the engine is colder than it is. This causes the ECU to advance timing and richen the fuel. This has caused damage on some platforms. Take it out and throw it away, it is not adding any performance.

Full bingo on everything (BTW, nice clear concise first post, Ben :thumbsup)
Just to reiterate the point, our tranny's are awfully strong. They can take a beating (words of experience. Speed shifting @ 7600rpm on a 200k tranny that is still going strong).
Good luck on the mods.

Thanks for all the great advice...I'll need it soon. I'll look into taking that module off, but I'm kind of hesitant at this point. With those two mods my HP magically increased from ~191 to ~249...I doubt the CAI alone did that, but you guys know more than I do :). I'll be sure to stop back here with future questions. Thanks again, and thanks for the warm welcome.

I think the owner before me did some engine mods...ther eis no way to know b/c he is canned for DUI and that is how i got his car...from the day i got it i was able to pull a low 14 sec (right around 14.3 sec) almost 13 in the 1/4...figured it to be around 191 bhp...it is just stock AS FAR AS I KNOW until i tear it apart to see what he did to it, but there is definately something aftermarket in there...

your 191 figure is for the birds as well at the 50hp increase from your intake and the resistor (oh i am sorry you called it a module).
if you would like to debate this i suggest you post a Dyno sheet.

alright...so you wanna play that game.....
here the first thing...you don't need to get shitty with me asshole...i'm not debating anything, i'm simply stating my OBSERVATIONS...would you like me to spell that out for you? observation are not 100% right/wrong, they are merely IDEAS...not saying you're wrong and not saying you're right...so you can take that post and shove it up your ass
second...you give me the money and find a place to dyno my car within 50 miles of Plymouth, IN (zip code 46563) and i'll take it there. until then i'll use my 1/4 mile times and weight of my car to do the esimated calculations...how accurate? hell if i fucking know...hence the word... "A-B-O-U-T"

HP is HP. figuring in the weight is just plain boosting the numbers to make your car look more powerful then it really is. period.
Your not going to be replying to this so have a nice day.

You're from Plymouth? Interesting, so am I. There is NO other 2GNT that I know of in this town that makes the power you're talking about. I can almost guarantee I've seen your car around town, what color is it? With the rate your attitude is going right now, you won't be a member here for long.
