6117, WTF was in my tranny?!?
Posted by Collente, Feb-10-07 09:19 AM
So I've been slipping out of fifth and found a new tranny. In the process of pulling the bellhousing, I thought I'd pull off the end plate where I thought the gear box was and I see a ton of crap.. I clear that off and see this sticking out of one of the shafts.

To my knowledge the tranny has never been worked on... WTF. I can't imagine it's supposed to be in there and it pulled right out. Looks like someone made it and put it in there.
I looked in the cap just to make sure but I don't see the piece in any diagram...

Also, on that last pic, is that plastic piece that's kind of hidden behind the metal supposed to be flush or sticking out like the other side?

OK not being to well versed in these trannies, here goes. First off the black plastic piece is correct (I took a look at a tranny I have in pieces). It acts as a channel for oil transfer for the tranny.

The metal piece came out of the center of that shaft, yes? If so, why did you bend it?!! Heh heh, J/K. It goes in the center of that shaft and it is flat (as far as I can see). Exactly what it does I'm really not sure. But I bet it has something to do with 5th gear popping out :P .

BTW, if you want to pop those shafts out of the bearings, good luck with that. Helluva press out with a 40 (?) ton press.

It's an oil baffle that goes inside the input shaft. it's supposed to be there, however, it's supposed to have a black plastic ring that keeps it in place.
