My tranny on a drive home yesterday didnt engage into second when I was down shifting then the same happened to 4th and reverse is now hard to shift into. The only gears that are working are 1st, 3rd, and 5th they work perfectly. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be. I also have another tranny that I recently pulled that shifted ok but made a loud nosie screaking noise but once I pushed the clutch in it went away. Any ideas? All the help would be great.

Checl the linkage both on the trans and the shifter. This sounds like a linkage problem, without a doubt. make sure the retaining clips are in place on the trans side.

You were right it was the shift linkage. How should I repair it the linkage is broken the wire that runs inside of the middle fibers is broken? Any ideas?
Also I didnt think it would be the TOB because I thought that would only engage when the clutch is pressed in and when that happens there was no noise at all. Once I let go of the clutch and the tranny was in neutral it made all kinds of noise but I could shift through every gear without any problems it was just so damn loud.
