5990, South bend dxd clutch problems
Posted by taclipse, Dec-30-06 07:23 AM
I just recently got my car back together from building the head. My bottom end was previously built and i left it untouched. I was driving to work and when i tried to shift into second i couldnt get in. My pedal is firm and my hydraulics are all in working order. My throw out was making noise prior to this incident but it always made noise ever since i ran any kind of aftermarket clutch, in this case its a southbend. I was wondering if anyone had ever had a southbend clutch pressure plate fail on them. I am gonna tear it back apart tonight and look into it.

Well i just dropped the transmission. When i unbolted the pp all the springs and rivets in the hub came falling out. Time to call Andy and see what he can do for me.

Well, there's a surprise. I suspect that Andy will treat you well (just from his reputation). I can't see the pics (if that's what they are) but definitely keep us posted.

Thanks for the reply bro! I thought no one read this thing! I have only heard good things about Andy and he was a very cool guy to deal with when i bought the clutch from him. I hope it really handles all the power he says it will. I am trying to hit 400+ and i told Andy that. He said it will handle anything that i could throw at it!

Andy helped me out really well. He said he will rebuild it free of charge but i opted to pay the diff and upgrade to the baller status dxd ss series or whatever the top of the line model is. Andy suggested that i take a dial indicator and check the play in my input shaft front bearing ( the roller beargin wif the plastic cage). He stated that if that was out it would cause a vibration that would destroy the center hub of any clutch. This might have been part of the problem I had with my spec clutches.... i still hate spec. I mailed it out today.... I guess all i can do is wait!

The input bearing has a plastic cage but you cant see it, its one piece with the input seal and is encased in stainless steel. The bearing with the plastic cage you can see is the output shaft bearing. Your getting them confused.
