5792, finished swap, now here are my problems
Posted by EclipseSix, Oct-13-06 07:14 PM
Purchased a used trans and everything else needed to do the swap from Terry here.

Just finished installing about everything (left the speedo and reverse sensors alone for now) and now I'm having some trans problems.

First of all, I can't get into 5th or reverse gears. The shifter will not budge an inch in that general direction. When I first drove it it shifted into 1st-4th just fine (kinda notchy actually). I drove it down the road and suddenly it wouldn't catch in 2nd or 4th, only 1st and 3rd. The shifter just stays loose when i push it towards 2nd or 4th. Now sometimes I can catch those gears (again notchy, but it works).

I think I need to bleed the clutch lines again, but that doesn't explain the 5th/reverse problem (I don't think).

sigh, a whole day of excitement ends with such frustration, i need some sleep :-\

did you hook up the right cables to the right arms on the tranny? on the shifter?

Are the clips that hold the cables to the shifter housing on?

are the pins and washers on the cable ends ok?

I'm pretty sure the cables are on the right arms (jut matched them up by length, I don'tthink I could get them to go the other way). I put the pins in but not the washers. Do I just add a washer on top of the bearing? or both ontop and below?

I'll have to check for the clips that hold them to the shifter. Do those look like metal shims?

its weird that the shifter will not even budge (I have tried forcing it with no luck) in that general direction (right from neutral). are the 96/97 shifters different? Because I know the trans is a 96 and the shifter comes from a 97... I don't see how they would be any different though. sigh, I sure hope this isn't the trans.

yes washers go there.

Yes the clips look like U shims.

Un hook it from the tranny end, see if its the cables that are binding or the tranny.

shifters are the same for all eclipses and 95-99, its just the cables that are different.

Thanks for the help, I'm going to install the shims and check out all the linkage tomorrow. Terry's being helpful as always, and if it turns out to be an internal trans problem I'm gonna be meeting up with him to take care of the problem.

Here's to my first major eclipse problem :P and here's to many more :thumbsup haha

Well I put the shims in (U shaped piecesof metal that slide into a slot on the trans that your linkage cables go through. This shim keeps thec ables secure and in place, and must be there or you'll lose 2nd and 4th gears sometimes from the cable bending out of place)

and that fixed the 2nd and 4th problems, and I played with the linkage and got the shifter to shift into 5th and reverse. So now I have gears 1-5 but still no reverse! No matter what I do I can't get the car to engage in reverse, strange..

I would take terry up on his offer. Like you said, if the cables and brackets are not set up right, its not ding its job.

UGh. I am getting so tired of Transmissions. Tranny down in 45mins, repaired and reinstalled in a total of 3 hours. That includes removing and reinstalling the clutch hardline from the clutch master ( I rerouted it the way it should be), draining and bleeding the hydraulic system. I also adjusted the clutch pedal, its where i would choose for it to be. Not a bad time for my 5th or 6th time this year.

Notchiness i think your talking about is just the way the trans is. Feels fine to me, it like the 2 other cars i have so its not abnormal. No idea why it wouldnt pivot towards 5th gear. As for why it wouldnt go into reverse, got it taken care of. My error before i gave it to you. No damage all is good, took it for a ride this morning.

Off to bed now, its been a long 16hours.
