After my engine rebuild it seems as though the transmission is having a hard time shifting. When I'm at idle, I can go through all the gears easily, but when i'm actually moving it's very hard. If I don't pull it out of gear at the exact moment I hit the clutch then it won't get out of gear and I have to yank it out of gear. When I try to shift into the next gear, it won't go in at first - I have to keep putting pressure on the shifter until it finally pops in. When I try to downshift, it won't go into gear unless I rev up the engine to match the rpm's. I don't think it's the shifter cables because I can shift through all the gears easily if I'm not moving, it only gets hard when I'm driving. Any ideas on what could be wrong? I was thinking maybe the synchros but this happens for every gear, not just one or two.

Did you remove your slave cylinder line? You might need to bleed the slave cylinder. Also, when is the last time you changed or checked the level of transmission oil?

I bled the slave with a vacuum pump already and the transmission fluid is full

Well, because you are talking about a rebuild, my first thought is mounts (engine and tranny). If mounts are loose, they can cause this condition. Be sure that all bolts are tighten down (as well as engine to tranny bolts). Also, check to be sure that nothing is binding/getting stuck in the shift linkage.

Obviously, if she was working fine prior to rebuild then I would not suspect the tranny (plus the symptoms don't really suggest tranny. They suggest engagement which is normally clutch/geometry area).

That brings us to the clutch. Any noise when you are not stepping on the clutch? If so does it go away when you step on the clutch (or vice versa)? Does the clutch feel "funny" at all? Yes to any of these and you have to look at the clutch or clutch engagement system (ie slave cylinder etc.).

Theres no funny noises when I'm not on the clutch or when I am on the clutch. The clutch feels perfectly fine too. I checked the shifter linkages and they're fine. All the motor mounts and tranny mounts are tightened down, the only thing is I left out the little rubber things that go on either side of the tranny mount when I reinstalled it. I didn't think it made a difference because it was just a flimsy piece of rubber. I've actually kind of gotten used to driving like this and it doesnt really feel like theres much of a problem at all nemore, but the only thing is that I can't shift very fast, there's a little pause between each shift where I have to wait for the shifter to pop in.
