I searched and actually didn't find much, odd. Anyways, I have always been extreamly paranoid about my car and was looking into some more saftey features. Since I plan on doing some drag runs and get into autox I figure a transmission cooler could only help. I have a few very stupid questions about them however. I have only seen them used in automatics, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to use one on a manual correct. I know it may be overkill but it does stay over 90 and into 100 a lot where I live and the car is stored in the winter so I think its a good idea. I like the B&M supercooler series but it says its an automatic transmission cooler, but it shouldn't matter right? The 70255 is 11in x 5.75in x .75 in which seems enough to me, assuming it will fit in front of the radiator. Now for install, I found this picture



Seems pretty easy, there is a tube comming from the transmission to the stock radiator, then one leaving the stock radiator back to the tranny? Anyone know which one is which?

Last, Is there anything else I should know about these? Just mount it in front of the radiator on the drivers side? Is it actually worth $50?

Eh, I really can't find anything about a manual transmission cooler, hopefully they can actually be used otherwise I will feel pretty stupid. Someone prove me wrong.

ok dude, just some questions and food for tought.

1.) How will you be Pumping the oil?
2.) Why do you think that the oil in there ( aluminum case) would get hot enough to cause problems? You forget that the oem manufacturers test cars in extreme heat and cold...just for that reason.
3.) Where wouls the oil come in and out of?
4.) only ATX radiators have the built in coolers.

I would not worry about it man, Guys that beat, abuse and push 4 times the power this tranny was designed for are not having problems...why would you? Just maintain it and it will do its job and more.

A manual tranny shouldn't be generating much heat if your tranny fluid is good. The bellhousing is a big aluminum heatsink too.

99.9% of all manual transmissions won't need a cooling solution. Automatics work fundamentally different and have lower efficiency, which means that wasted energy gets turned into heat which needs to be transferred somewhere, in most cases to the atmosphere through a radiator.

Thanks guys, no need to bash me though as I was just wondering. I know very little how transmissions work and their cooling systems. I also clearly stated that I didn't know if it was needed or possible. I asked to learn, which I did. Thank you for the explinations.

I considered something like this a long time ago, but realiztically, you'll never have enough waste heat in the trans fluid to need it. As well, you're just adding complexity with a pump to move the fluid ($$$) plus lines to the cooler.. in truth, your transaxle would be best served with a pump-fed filter over a cooler, but even that is a bit overkill. Use a bigger trash magnet and change your fluid every every ten thousand miles and its a non-issue.

Even then I would think it be over kill. The only particles in there would be from synchros and from gear grinding.

The heat comes mostly from "pumping" the fluid. Its friction, thats all.
