I got my car second hand, so I really don't know how much life is left on the clutch. Is there a good indicator of it being low, or do I just have to find out one day that it's dead?

Try and get the car rolling from a stop in second gear. If the clutch slips really bad, then its on its way out. If you have no real probs getting the car moving, then its still in decent shape. How many miles on the clutch now??

With the car stopped, put it in 5th and come out on the clutch and if it stalls, the clutch is still gripping good, if it stays running then the clutch is slipping.

I have no clue how many miles is left on the clutch, that's why I wanted to test if it's still in good shape =). Thanks for your input guys.

Also you can try shifting from 2nd too 5th... Then punch it, if it dies down good...Revs up bad.

nice, I did all those tests and my clutch passed them all :)

Also, if your clutch is starting to slip, you should start to notice the grab point with the pedal moving higher up.

It will keep moving up and slipping worse and worse until it gets to the point where the clutch just doesn't grab anymore and you're in permament neutral :)

The test when you start in 2nd from a dead stop isnt that bad on the clutch/tranny.Also is starting in 5th from a stop to see if it stalls also bad?I thought it wasnt good to stall the car.

I always found that to be a misconception... stalling the car, in my opinion, is just the car's way of preventing even more problems. It stalls cuz it knows that if it didn't, something really bad would happen.

It stalls cause it has no choice, the load being placed on it is too great and isn't allowing the engine to spin fast enough to keep idle.

Will stalling alot kill your clutch then, or the transmission?
