5158, tranny removal questions
Posted by baxsom, Feb-20-06 10:08 AM
ok so i have researched a lot here lately on tranny removals since I am doing the lsd, neon swap thing

a few questions that i need to get answered if i could

how far do i need to get the car up. i can do it in my garage if all i need is 4 two ton jack stands

if i need to get it up in the air further than that i need to go to my dads garage who has a car lift.

getting the axles out seems to be no problem after reading corbins axle removal page but actually dropping the tranny

how does it go around the clutch which if i read correctly stays attached to the engine? the tranny drops straight down. i am guessing that there is a recess in the block for the clutch components and that the 4 bolts in the flex plate that attach to the clutch sit flush with each other

sorry for all the questions but this is the biggest job i have attempted and even then i am having the differential installed into the neon tranny by the trans shop
the shimming process scares me

Get the car up as high as the jack will allow you. mine i think raises up 18 inches.

The clutch will unbolt like a torque converter befor you unbolt the trans.

cool,
i think i can get the car that far up in the garage

i also have the service manual on cd as well as a haynes manual in the mail

hopefully between those two this wont be as hard as i think

i am beginning to believe that chiltons blows

reading the transaxle removal page, i get stuff like

take this part off and then goes to the next part. a quick subheading on how to take the afore mentioned part would be nice

all in all it doesnt look too hard

but i was quoted 1500 bucks to drop tranny, swap bellhousings onto a neon tranny, open the neon tranny case and install the LSD and to put it all back together

thats labor only

holy cow

takes me 1 hour to drop my trans, 1.5 hours to open it, reseal it close it and re-install. Thats the same job your doing with that job. Read my writeup and the neon trans swap and that should guide you throuh the actual trans work.

i just read your write up
it helps immensly

i posted a reply to it there that probably should have been posted here so please move or delete it if necessary

basically you mentioned that the ring gear on a neon differential is smaller than the one on an eclipse

I purchased a LSD for an eclipse, should i have gotten one for a Neon or will the ring gear swap over

the ring gear itself bolts to the differential. so the diff you ordered is the same and correct one. the gear itself is what you will need to swap over.

LMAO

...the yukon quest sled race just ended, I should ask the winner to borrow his doggies.

I'm considering getting that obx helical lsd...I'm looking for a tranny, so while it's out, might as well upgrade differential and clutch
