4782, Should I attempt this?
Posted by TKI, Sep-28-05 05:09 PM
Well, I bought a trans a while back b/c the old one blew apart. The new one worked pretty good, but the speed sensor was broke and took it off I found the problem. The drive gear on the differential has came off inside. It is still around the diff. but it appears as though its just sittin there and not turning.

Here is the question:

Im a pretty exprienced mechanic, but ive never cracked open a trans. apart from the old one, and it was late and I dont remember b/c we just kinda ripped it open b/c it was crap anyways. Would it be a bad idea for me to try to open my new trans. case and replace the gear on the differential? I have another gear off of the diff. in the old trans.

I was just basically wondering if I opened it up, if parts were gonna fly everywhere and I would be screwed b/c I dont know how to put something together if i didnt see how it came apart.

Thanks for any input!

No, face the shaft up, and bell housing up. Undo bolts, tap open if yo need to. The only thing that might fall out will be some bearings. Its Easy to see where those go though. Diff is right there, pick up with hands change/repair. Plop back in, use sealant. Assemble.

Granted getting that bearing to stay on the top half in there has its trick. some use paper others use grease.
