4673, Fair price for a rebuild Posted by doctorgonzo, Aug-02-05 02:52 PM
Alright-
I just bought a 96 RS w/160k. It was my neighbor's, she sold it to me for $500. The body and interior are in excellent shape, but it doesn't run. My intentions are to turbo it eventually, and run between 6-8psi boost. As I understand it, the stock internals are perfectly capable of handling this.
I took it to a friend's shop (I thought he was a friend), and he did a compression test and said it was horrible...bent valves, possibly. He quoted me $2700 to rebuild the motor. Looking at the cost of factory replacement parts, machine work, remove and reinstall labor, and the actual rebuild, this seems pretty high.
Any thoughts?
I just didnt expect to put this much into the car...any thoughts guys?
Thanks! It's my first post, because I just bought a DSM! Woohoo!

I wouldnt rebuild with the stock internals. If its going to be rebuilt anyway, you should think about Eagles and JE's. I think you will regret it later down the line when you cant boost past 7 psi. And end up wanting to rebuld with stronger shit anyway. And yes, thats a little high IMO for a stock rebuild.
btw wrong section
