As i'm sure many people have, i've been toying around with the idea of making their car either a rear or an all wheel drive.... my question is this... on my 97 GS... would it be possible to make the correct modifications to the tranny, get a driveshaft and slap on a rear differential... i mean like on the basis of the chassi... would it get in the way? Is the chassi for the GSX any different from any other model?

no you will need to fabricate and weld in an entire rear 4 link subframe and install a rear differential like a ford 9 inch or dana60. the GSX rear end will not hold up to rwd only.

i'm with this guy!! i don't want to give up my 420a but i want awd too. i'm right now trying to put it all toghether(on paper)it has to do with a srt-4 tranny and transfer case and a gsx parts car for rear end and driveshaft parts and a shit load of work and custom axles and what not.if its possible i am going to go through with it. i already found a tranny and transfer case. 98 eclipse rsx-turbo, sound like a typo

but is he useing the 4g63 in the avenger??? i will definatly do a good write up but don't hold your breath because i still need to get alot of stuff. i'm waiting for a guy to give me a price on a use srt4 tranny and stuff. if anyone knows where i can get these parts for a good price please let me know because this guy wants alot. i also need a gsx parts car for rearend, suspension and stuff, i will probably get that local tho. megasquirt and my race head come first tho. i want 25-30psi with the awd. the worst part is they don't seem to make an automatic srt-4 so i have to go with the 5 speed (dam!). you all probably think i'm nuts but my 98 auto rs is insane at 20psi. i love building boost on the line just wish i had better tires and i could stop blowing 3rd and 4th gear every 1000 miles because they just don't hold up stock at that much boost. can't wait tho, i love the way 98 rsx-turbo sounds.

You do know that the SRT4 trans won't physically fit in your engine bay, right? And that it has no provisions for a transfer case? And that there's not any way to add it?

yea i thought the same thing, i just threw up the idea of him usin a 6 bolt 4g63 and then goin awd, it has been done on avengers so i know it can be done an eclispe or talon with the same exact modifations done to the venge, except the longer drive shaft for the rear, it would be the same size as the one for the gsx

thanks for the support asshole! you know the more i come to this forum the more i hate all the close minded know-it-all assholes that post negative shit rather than correct and help their fellow tuners. i was completely wrong about the srt-4 tranny i know. i told you that i just began this quest for AWD 420A and i was sure of nothing. no idea what i was thinking but i have done some more research and i really think i have a way to make my 420A an AWD. i might use a transfer case from a chrysler town&country awd van and custom make the driveshaft to work with a gsx rear. sounds crazy but it might work. let the flaming began!

holy shit are you trying to be helpful now? its about time. i need rearend,driveshaft,gas tank with both sending units,complete rear suspension, 3 inch or bigger gsx exhaust,and all the nuts and bolt, i would really like to have a whole car becuase you need to cut the carrier bearing mount from the gsx and weld it on the rs. its getting to the point where i will buy parts tho because you can't find these cars wrecked. dsmtuner forum has a great write-up on the gst-gsx swap with good pictures, i need everything listed for that swap. one thing i will tell you is this is only possible with an auto tranny so i'm kinda in the wrong section now, or mabey they will start an awd section when i'm done(ha,ha)

SO you're using an a604 minivan trans from an AWD caravan, and hoping to use a GSX rear crossmember and pumpkin.

As this has been discussed before, some things you might like to know:

1. the A604 ATX trans is not very strong. Do not expect it to last under hard launches with a high stall converter.
2. Same for the xfer case.
3. The gearing in the GSX rear is going to be completely wrong for the outout of the a604. You're going to have to find or make a custom ring&pinion for it if you expect it to work.
4. You're not the first to try this. Hit up "Glacius" for suggestions.

i am very aware of all of this and then some, belive me i have done some homework on this. details will be givin after it is complete. i do thank you for trying to direct me to some helpful info. this will happen! i will keep all who have hope posted. P.S. somebody find me a parts car

Well, you do know what you're talking about, Mr. Bumpy Bumperton.

i will send you all info as soon as i am done. i have a awd tsi parts car now so all that is left is to have gears made and right side axle made unless i find one the right size. almost forgot, i need to have a custom drive shaft yoke made (simple). hopefully i will have this done in a few weeks. the gears are a little expensive and could take awile but i hope not. so far i have about $1000 invested but it all depends on how cheap you can find the 2 parts vehicals that you need (awd town&country minivan,95-99 awd eclipse/talon). anyone serious should contact me about the rearend gears because i will already have a ratio and a company to make them by next week and might get a much better deal if more than one set is ordered. see you at the shootout, i'll be the only rs making bill hahns car look silly. he's going to have to change his fastest rs in the world shit. j/k bill i only hope

update; the gsx rearend,gas tank,driveshaft are all installed. now i am waiting for my power transfer unit to come back with the right set of gears in it and bolt it back in. then find an axle to fit the front right side and i will be turning all four. then we will see how much it can really take. i think the only weak link is my garbage tranny.

still here. i had all my shit robbed right after my last post and have been trying to get back to where i was. they didn't get my t3/t4 thank good but they were one bolt shy. but now i have bigger better intercooler 24x12x4 and replace all the steel pipe with alum. better bov,dp, and deltagate. still going to go awd but for now im going to put a neon 3speed in it and see what it does at the track fwd this spring. i'm leaving the awd tank and rear in it but just going to pull the pumkin out for now. all i realy have left is custom driveshft and front right axle both will be easy to have done. then we see what breaks first. gsx rear holds fine in a modded gsx why wouldn't it hold?? the transfer unit is twice the size of a gsx and was used in a 3.8l van that is alot heavier than my car i realy think it might be ok for now. so i'm just worried about the tranny. anyone know how much power you can put through a pt cruiser tubo tranny???the good one.
