Alright, I know that many of us have a tranny rattle and I have heard that its pretty much associated with aftermarket clutches.

In my particular case ( CM stage 4 ) the fingers on the pressure plate were not level all the way around. I am pretty sure they are supposed to be. Anyway, I think that the fact that the fingers sit unevenly around the inside of the pressure plate that they hit the TOB causing it to rattle.

Now the slave cylinder has a small rod that pushes on the clutch fork which holds the TOB. It seems to hold it with some pretty good pressure, causing it to sit very close, and in my case, contact the fingers on the pressure plate...causing the rattle.

My thought is that if I shave the little rod on the slave cylinder a little bit to make it shorter, it would not allow the TOB to sit so close to the pressure plate. HOPEFULLY fixing the rattle, and prevent premature TOB wear.


Does this make sense to anyone else? See any possible problems with doing this?

your clutch hydraulic system is much liek your braks caliper. the slave cylinder piston is pushed back into the cylinder so if you shave the rod it will not make a difference.

Clutch chatter my friend is a common issue with any car. It is not so much the TOB but the clutch design. Do a search on the internet, most all data points to the clutch engineering and a cause of flaws in the pressure plate or flywheel. You sometime can make the chatter go away by pushing in the clutch and letting it back out.....this is because you are allowingthe disk to re-seat itself in a better spot. There is nothing you can do but install better speakers so you dont hear it....lol

Here is one more thing to think about.....if you shave the clutch rod, the next time you push in the clutch pedal the Clutch fork will be pushed in less causing the TOB to be pushed in less. Next you got it...the clutch plate spring is pushed in less. You may end up with a clutch that begins to drag everytime you try and shift....grinding gears you will go.

As for Dino, I am not worried. He can be harsh sometimes, but he knows his shit and is actually pretty cool, especially in person.

I wasn't going to be mean. Simply put, the whole POINT of the TOB is to allow a movable interface between a spinning clutch pressure plate and a stationary clutch fork. It's DESIGNED to touch the pressure plate. They don't rattle because they touch, they rattle because they: 1) need lubrication 2) are loose in the fork 3) are in need of replacement. My money is leaning towards 90% of the people with TOB noise just not seating it in the fork properly. Your issue sounds more clutch related than TOB related.

There will still be beer for the DINO at the SO.:cheers
