2835, Clearification on the 3.55 neon guts swap
Posted by mitsudsr, May-26-04 09:22 AM
Ok, I spent today doing research on the neon 3.55 swap, but still have a few questions. First off how hard is it to swap out the internals of the 2 trans? I am not a great mechanic so I need to know if they bolt up exatcly the same or if there is any fudging that needs to take place. I read the post by Dino and he did it in a weekend plus Thusday but I am sure he is a way better mechanic than me. Also can anybody recamend a place to try and find a neon tranny? Thanks guys I need just a little more clearification and then I will be back up and running.

neons.org to find a used 3.55

i got a complete 60K mile 3.55 for $225 shipped

I did a 5spd swap, so i just used the entire neon transfer case and bolted up a 2gNT bellhousing to it. If you wanted to switch to a cable clutch setup you would just use the neon bellhousing.

I have not done this mod yet but I do have the 95 sohc tranny at the house... Dino sent me a quick and dirty writeup on it, Basicly it will all bolt up fine. The Guts are all the same just different gear ratios. The only "fudging" is that you need to put the Neon transaxle onto the 2gnt bell housing so it will bolt up to the motor. Here are Dino's words...
I'd take it all out of the case and inspect it, but I wouldn't necessarily
go so far as to tear down the input shaft. Just make sure all the syncro
teeth are good and sharp, and make sure the stop ring gap is within spec.
If all that is good, buy new ring gear bolts, use your good diff with the
3.55 ring gear, buy fluid, go to town.

That is correct all you do is remove the 2gnt bellhousing from your trans and put it on the 355 trans. no other work is needed to make the 355 trans work in yours. the speed sensor from the neon trans should be swapped over as well, the platic gear on the sensor is different.

I have one that i am probably going to sell, not really going to use it but i paid 350. for it at a junkyard.
