2811, HELP!!! Tranny will not go into 2nd 4th or reverse Posted by eclipseman1999, May-23-04 03:25 PM
The car was perfectly fine and as I was exiting the freeway and coming to a stop I went to put it in neutral and it felt shifter felt sloppy and wouldnt go in to 2nd 4th or reverse. It doesnt grind or even go into that gear its like its not there or feels as if there wasnt a shifter cable on the tranny. I checked both ends of the two shifter cables and they are still connected to the tranny and shifter. So what the hell is going on??

Just checked under the hood while some whent through the gears and only the one cable moves for 1st 3rd and 5th. When trying to go into the other gears the second cable doesnt move so hopefully its just the cable itself.

If it is not moving, it is most likely your cable, or possibly the shifter. Open the console up Shawn and take a look and see if something is not working correctly under there. Also, does your clutch feel any better after I messed with the slave cylinder?

Make sure the cables are still connected to the brackets, not just the shift select arms.

Check the brackets and connections inside and out. I'd put movney the problem lies in the linkage.
There's also a slight posibility the ab;e broke inside the linkage.

I checked from the inside all the way to the firewall and the tranny all the way to the firewall and nothing seems to be wrong with the cables. Both cables are still connect to the two brackets after the shifter. Also if one cable controls the up and down and the other one is left to right why is only 1st 3rd and 5th work?

You kind of answered your own question. The one linkage that control forward and back on the stick isn't moving the shifter fork. So the trans sees the sifter in only the forward position, so you have 1, 3, 5, when you move the stick side to side.

It's a cable. I doubt its actually broken, i'd be more willing to be its just not secure in a bracket. If it were broken, you would have been able to put it into 1st, 3rd, or 5th once, and not been able to pull it back out.
Have you watched the cables closely, while someone attempts to put it in 2nd, 4th, or reverse?

Just to update you all on the problem with Shawn's shifter cable, there is a C-Clip that secures the cable in the brackt on the Transaxle end. For some reason one popped out on its own, and whenever he would pull back on the shifter (Pushing the cable forward) the cable & sheath assembly would just bend and not actuate the pivot on the transaxle. Mitsubishi part number is MB367526 for that clip. I am going to order a couple tomorrow.

Shawn just left my place; we fixed it with a Genuine Mitsubishi part (lol)! I also put in his rear motor mount along with some thread locker and TORQUED them (nudge nudge run4cvr) along with the side and front mount bolts. They were easier than most oil pan bolts to take off. :nono
I am not sure who was responsible for torquing those down last time, but they are fired.
