1642, Kaaz LSD and Team RIP 5th Gear Posted by Ozzmosis86, Oct-26-03 02:08 PM
Can anyone tell me if Kaaz makes a LSD for the 2G NT cars. Everything I find is for the turbo cars only. I like thier design the best out of everything I have seen, but I can't find a model number for the NT cars. The quaife is a little bit pricey, and I don't really trust the PG style quite yet and I am getting ready to replace my tranny. I am also looking into replacing the stock 5th gear with a taller gear set from, http://www.teamrip.com/fwd.html. For less than $200 you can get a 5th gear that is 8%-16% taller than stock. I think this is an excelent mod for those of us who are still NA and not producing huge amounts of power. It allows us to keep our acceleration through 4th gear, and gives us some great highway gas milage and adds to our top end. If anyone has any experience with this please let me know.

I think all that stuff listed there is for 4g63 transmission so it won't work with our trans. You can get taller gearing if you replace your trans with a 3.55 final drive trans. Look on the main page to see compatible transmissions. Also as far as I know Kazz does not make a differential for us. I like the quaife but it is pricey. There is a retrofit unit that is made for us that is around ~$400. That may be on the main page as well but I'm sure that someone will post that information on this post.

I know that you can get taller gearing with the 3.55 tranny, but my car does not produce much power over stock. If I went with the 3.55 tranny I would lose alot of acceleration. By swaping out 5th gear alone I could keep my 1st through 4th acceleration and give myself a nice cruising gear. The company emailed me and they only have products for the 4g63 tranny. The 96-99 DOHC Neons that were not ACR or RT models had the tranny that I am looking for. It had gearing identical to ours for 1st through 4th and a 0.72 5th gear with a 3.94 final drive. If anyone has one of these transmissions, knows where I can get one, or has the 5th gear out of one please let me know. I believe that I can use the 5th gear out of any neon tranny that had the .72 5th in it, so if you have one of those let me know.
Thanks,
Andy

Why not just buy a .72 5th?

That is what I was asking. Can that be done? Are they a direct swap? And does anyone know where I can get the 0.72 5th gear at?

You should be able to buy it at the dealer, or perhaps go to a tranny shop and see if they can order it for you. Just tell them you need the 5th gear for whatever neon it came in, and verify that it is the proper ratio.

yeah, fits fine. Same gear, just a different ratio.

Anyone have any idea how expensive it would be to buy 5th gear? Would it be cheaper for me to find a used Neon tranny and steal 5th out of it?

gears run about $250. Transaxles run about $300-$350 from the boneyard.

Where would I go to get a gear for $250? Would I have to go to Satan himself?

I am getting myself confused here. By giving myself a 0.72 ratio 5th gear rather than the stock 0.81 I will be improving my gas mileage on the highway correct? Meaning my engine will be running at a lower speed while driving on the highway than with the 0.81 ratio. I had it figured out in my mind and then someone told me different and got me all confused. A simple "hey dipshit" reply would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Andy

Yup the lower gear ratio will turn the engine slower at the same ground speed.

someone should make an rpm vs speed chart for both the 3.55 and the 3.94. this would be very useful IMO. direct me that way if someone has already dones this. :cheers

another thought on this subject:
If you have the engine turning at a lower rpm at the usual cruising speed, you may find yourself unable to pass with any authority unless you downshift into 4th, which could be scary if you were doing 75 or so. Well, maybe not scary, but certainly not typical of a leisurely pass as usual. :P
