Just wondering how hard it is to get the trany out of our cars, i need to replace the speedometer drive gear thats in the tranny, i have an experienced mechanic with me, but hes mainly rwd, i just wanted to know a few things, 1. can u take the tranny out from the bottom, and if so any " hard " things about it or things that i will run into that are troublesome ? let me know please, thanks

yeah i've done this on a 420a model about 7-8 times.out of all of them the easiest way that we have found is too, go ahead and undo all your wires and cables, remove the battery and tray, undo the bottom brace plate that runs from the cradle to the front support, put a floorjack with a peice of wood (2*4) under the oil pan,then go ahead and undo the tranny bolts,then undo the tranny mount and ease it down with the jack and you will be able to pull it right out...e-mail me if you have any other questions bblueeclipse@yahoo.com

I know this sounds like alot but its the easiest way to do it,it will take you about an hour to hour and a half to get the tranny out.Be patient and don't be afraid to take a break if something like a bolt or something doesn't come out right or whatever.....just take your time and have pateince sometime they will be a biotch....:thumbsup

hey my bad dude, if its your speedo gear you don't have to drop the tranny. it located towards the back of the tranny on top it where you fill the tranny with fluid also. all you have to do is remove the battery and tray.......

if hes talking about the nylon part in the tranny on the diff he will have to drop the tranny. If this is true i would get some safing brakets and install them to while ur in there. Also make sure u get the right fluid for the transmission not any fluid will do. It cost me about 15 a quart and ur tranny holds 2 quarts. U'll have to get this at the dealership. If i can find the part number for the safing brakets i'll post them. you'll have to get these at a dodge dealership

yah ok thx for the info, i have a friend that works at the dealership and he gives me like 50% off on all the stuff there so the tranny fluid is like 8 a qt and the speedo gear was like 6 bucks, but ok thx for the info, i alreayd replaced the speed sensor and the pinion that goes on top of the tranny and still no results, i hear a grinding noise, im guessing its the messed up drive gear in side of it , my other question is to i have to like disasemble (sp) the whole tranny, ( ive never seen the inside of a tranny before ) like is the gear in plain sight or do i have to dig for it lol, my uncle is helping me , but hes more rwd cars, but im doing it any ways, theres no way im paying 600 dollars to put a 5 dollar part in my car !!

Yes, you will need to open up the trans. Dont be scared by it, its actally pretty easy. Once its open, you will see the diff right away. When you go back to put it together, you will need to use some anerobic sealnt on the case halves. Set the trans with all the guts on the floor, open side up of course. Then, be SURE to use lots of heavy greese on the output shaft bearing, and race, to hold the bearing in the BELLHOUSING side, so it stays in the race when you lower the bellhousing onto the trans.That bearing HAS to go in the RIGHT way, since one end is tapered!! The bellhousing will prob get hung up when there is only like 1/2" left to go. Usually it will hang on the shifter rods in the trans. Simply wiggle the shifter forks on the trans back and forth, and the bellhousing will pop right down. If that isnt working, get a long flat blade screwdriver, and a light, and find the rods in the trans, and then use the screwdriver to pop the rod ends into their bores, and then the bellhousing will come down, and then you are ready to bolt it together. The casing bolts need 20 ft lbs of torque. Be sure you dont smear the anerobic sealant if you use the screwdriver, so it wont leak. Follow the trans removal like mentioned above. Dont forget to drain the trans of fluid before you pop out the axles..I've taken my trans out many times now, and last time it was out in an hour and a half..just dont rush it, take your time.
