I am to the point where the half shafts are ready to come out but they seem to move out only a 1/2 inch and stop. Is there a clip holding them or do I need to grow some man berries and just pull harder? The car is a '95 Eclipse w/ the 420a non-turbo engine. Thanks.

Just use the prybar that came with your car to pop the axle out of the tranny. If it doesn't just pop out, rotate it 90* and keep trying. Shouldn't require much leverage.

There is a little C-clip on the end of the half-shaft that locks into a groove in the differential. There are instructions here:

Thanks! I will try that when I get home. I tried pulling a little harder yesterday but it felt like the axle was hitting something, so this explains a lot. Does the clip come out with the axle or does it stay in place? Are you suppose to replace it when you put the axles back in?

I am in the process of rebuilding the engine and transmission at the same time, I have done engines before but never the transmission. Any tips or suggestions?

The clip will come out with the axle. It is supposed to be replaced, but I have never bothered. If the clip is all scratched up, you should replace it. You can lightly file the clip smooth again if you are in a pinch (done that). I've usually had to use a crow bar to pop axles out unless they were brand new. The extent of my trans work was a shift kit and output gears. I washed my hands thoroughly, used clean paper towels, and kept a pan of fresh trans fluid available to dip parts in. I was trying to avoid leaving any dirt or grit inside the trans.
