2683, manual downshifting in a auto!!??
Posted by final_crisis, Mar-22-04 01:57 PM
ok, is it safe, possible, worth it, to down shift in a auto. i put my baby in 2nd and take off, when i get to third, shift to "D", then i wait a little and then i downshift to 2nd again then back to drive. i try to do this all before i reach 65 or so mph. it seems to work ok, and i do (assume) feel a better pull so to speak. so is this worth it, does anyone else do this? does it hurt the tranny etc etc????

i shift my tranny all the time, doesnt seem to hurt just builds heat faster thats why i got the temp guage, what your essentially doing is similar to what other are trying to make our trannies do which is the autostick mod.

Personally, I wouldn't force your trans into downshifts. I think its best to "ask" the trans to downshift by using the throttle. I do think its ok to move the selector into the gear you are currently in to prevent the TCU from upshifting prematurely.

IMO the only use for the L and 2 positions in an ATX are for when:
a) You need 2nd to navigate a long steep grade that would otherwise fry your brakes
OR
b) You need traction to pull a boat out of the water, or navigate deep sand or snow.

Using anything other than plain "D for Drive" is just making more heat, and therefore making less power, and causing more wear and tear.

Just my opinion, I'm sure other people will tell you otherwise, since Auto trannies are all voodoo and magick anyways.
